A story of family and history

I was impressed how Jay wove Chinese history throughout. I loved Kaiser’s narration and laughed out loud while commuting and listening to their story. Such a loving and diverse family! I also found myself identifying as a child of an elderly mother, making a note to be more empathetic. Truth is, though we come from diverse backgrounds, life learning may be similar. I was disappointed that I only had 56 minutes left this morning! I want it to go on! Surely, Ma has more to say! And I am excited as well for the future!

A stellar choice for my first audiobook

I’ve always been an avid reader, and although this book was well out of my usual wheelhouse, my appreciation for Jay’s charming glimpses shared on social media of his relationship with his redoubtable “Ma” — interspersed between his invaluable political analysis — inspired me to buy the book.

To my delight, I was treated to not only a touching memoir about a formidable (and funny) woman, but an engaging and artfully written tale of a remarkable family, stretching across oceans, decades and cultures. Kaiser’s narration and particularly his voice acting during dialogue really brought the story to life.

Congratulations on a wonderful book and performance, gentlemen — Ma would be proud.

A story of family

I loved that you could see and hear the love the family has for each other, and the surprise at the end made me cry! Thank you, Jay and Kaiser, for this audiobook version.

Love MA!

Best audiobook I’ved listened to. I laughed and cried, and feel like I know Jay and the entire Kuo family. I really appreciated the historical context and can imagine how parts of it mirror that of my own family. The performance was outstanding.

Such a wonderful family

Loved learning about another culture and Jay's brother did an awesome job of the reading. I will definitely be recommending it. Ma is someone I would have loved to meet.

A beautiful tribute

The memoir gives an insightful look into Chinese culture, especially from the first generation immigrant point of view. The book had me in tears by the end and wanting to go home and hug my own imperfect 85 yr old immigrant mother.

Fascinating, sad, and funny

Jay's story grabs you right away and takes you on a ride spanning decades and countries. The Kuo family history is told with depth and detail. MA was an amazing woman with a sharp wit and a deep love for her family. It's a wonderful story beautifully narrated by Jay's brother Kaiser, who does a great job with the different voices, especially MA's. I highly recommend this.
