In this book, I prefer to use the terms "second language" or "target language" rather than “foreign language.” This choice is deliberate because the term “foreign” often carries negative connotations and may hinder the language acquisition process by signaling the brain to reject it.
Additionally, I use “acquiring” or “mastering” a language instead of “learning” to draw a parallel with the natural way a child picks up their mother tongue. Traditional learning methods, suitable for subjects like mathematics or history, do not align well with language acquisition. These methods often lead to knowledge about a language, like French or Spanish, but without the ability to effectively use or speak it.
