Publisher's Summary

Lucy Sullivan is 26 and living it up (and occasionally down) in London.

Hers is a life of quiet, undisciplined desperation. But when she and three friends visit a psychic for a bit of fun and the woman's predictions start coming true, Lucy is horrified. For the fortune-teller insisted she'd soon be married - within the year, in fact. Not only does Lucy not have a boyfriend, but the chances of getting one are looking slim.

Between the bottles of wine, antidepressants and her addiction to self-help books, she's not quite ready to walk, or even stumble, down the aisle sober. Is Lucy's fate really written in the stars? Or will she finally take control of her own destiny?

Worst characters ever

I usually love Marian Keyes, I find her tone of writing very funny and down to earth, and her characters are always relatable and human. However, this book didn't contain a single likeable person. The protagonist, Lucy, is whiny, obnoxious and very faux-modest, and the dialogue is often either stilted or irritating ( take for example the constant need to address a person by name at the beginning or end of EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE.) The narrator definitely didn't help, as she had none of the charm usually possessed by Marian Keyes' narrators, and managed to make everyone sound even more entitled and awful. I really have trouble believing this is written by the same author as Last Chance Saloon and Sushi for Beginners, as this book is just riddled with horrible characters, tedious dialogue and a plot that is shallow at best. Absolutely no surprises along the way either, it is blatantly obvious who Lucy will end up with from the moment he's introduced, and every other plot point is predictable and cloying. Don't waste your time on this one, I felt like ripping my hair out on several occasions.

Brilliant Book, Well Narrated

As a longtime, die-hard fan of Marian Keyes, listening to her books as opposed to reading is always a bit anxiety-inducing at first. Although others have criticized the narrator, I thought she did an excellent job, with one exception. She is very talented with accents, producing flawless London (Cockney-ish), Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Yorkshire and even German! The only place she falls down is with Daniel. The character of Daniel, whilst being gentlemanly and kind, is also meant to be cool, saavy, good looking with a good job... and she makes him sound like a bumbling, goofy, uneducated half-wit - not Daniel at all - especially if you have read the book prior to listening. However, overall a very good performance.

Sweet story

I enjoyed the story, as I do all of Marian Keyes books. I didn’t like the narrator’s “men’s voices”, they all sounded annoyingly dumb.

Amazing performance!

Amy McAllister’s ability to perform accents so well and to switch between them so breezily is amazing! Story is good but imagine it wouldn’t read as well as you can listen to it.

Fun read

I enjoyed this book. Since it was written awhile ago, I’ll say the writer is definitely fat phobic and sometimes quite harsh. It took me sometime to get I to but once I did, it was a fun romantic story.

How COULD you???

How could you take my favourite Marian Keyes book and destroy it so much by insisting Amy McAllister speak in such a DISASTER of an accent. You idiots! Years, YEARS, I have waited for the audio version of this book to come out. Who the hell in their right mind is going to be able to listen to 17 hours and 46 minutes of a complete CHAV destroying this literary masterpiece. You may as well have asked Vicky Pollard to speak. No book in history has made me laugh as much as this over the years. This book will have to be returned. Disappointed isn’t the word. What market research did you do to get the correct voice. She basically yells constantly. Moronic.

Oh Dear.... a much loved book disappointedly preformed!

As a much read book from my youth I really looked forward to seeing this on Audible. I had see the other reviews but thought “give it ago”. Apart from the accents being dodgy .. that happens you can get past it, I really couldn’t get past the narrator shouting the book at me! The mispronunciations and mixed accents began to grind by chapter Ten which is not really long into the book. I’m returning the title and getting my glasses prescription updated I’ll keep to the audible books and Narrators I like. At 210 audiobooks I think I can offer a good review. I have a lot of well loved Marian Keyes books and she is one of my favourite authors.

Dreadful narrator

The dreadful accents of the characters totally distracts from the text. I had not previously read this Marian Keyes book, so was looking forward to hearing it. I now feel that I can NEVER READ it as I will always have the appalling narrator playing in my head. Such a massive disappointment.

Awful audible narration

Terrible accents. Narrator uses the wrong accents for characters at some points of the book also. The Scottish accent, wow, shameful.

Awful narration

Such A shame as it’s clearly not the narrator’s fault. However she was guided to speak with the most ridiculous accent as was Daniel. Quite a good story. Definitely not one of her best.

Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married

This has long been one of my favourite books, and I was delighted when it was recorded on audible but what a disappointment it has turned out to be. In my opinion the narrator has spoiled not only the characters but also the story.

Disappointing

I’m a great Marian Keyes fan but this is a very childish story narrated by what sounds like a teenager. Full of bad accents first time I have bought a book without sampling the narration just assumed it would be as good as the others

Lucy is the problem

Lucy is so annoying, I’ve never disliked the main character in a novel as much as I dislike her.

17 hours I'll never get back

I have listened to all of Marian Keyes' books and was very excited when I saw this 'new' title pop up. Although it was recorded in 2019, the book was published in 1997. Basically, it's terrible. It is long, painful and poorly written. The main character is intensely annoying, with a breathtakingly huge lack of self awareness. The other characters are either lacklustre or just hard to like. It is totally cliched and predictable, with the outcome of the story obvious within the first few minutes. The narrator was average, and her Australian accent for one of the characters was woefully bad. I only continued to listen to this book as I am stubborn and bloody minded. When it finished, I actually exclaimed 'thank God it's over'. I really hope that Marian Keyes ' 2020 book, Grown Ups, is back to her usual high standard.

bloody awful

I started out excited until I realized it was old 1997 book. Worse narration ever and the characters were awful and unlikeable. 17 hours I won't get back. I hope her new book is better.

Very unlikeable characters

Marian Keyes is a great writer and has some wonderful turns of phrase with a lot of laugh out loud witty lines. She is however, also the queen of creating extremely unlikeable and annoying characters who are very difficult to feel anything for except repulsion and anger. The lead character in this book especially makes you just want to smack her in the head as she is so pathetically stupid and pitiful.

Another delightful story

After pushing past the bad Aussie accent, I really enjoyed the story. It was funny, relatable, and had a great message, and as always had a happy ending. Definitely worth the listen.

Narrator is fantastic! The Characters are horrible

Lucy Sullivan and Co are a group of people I NEVER EVER EVER want to have in my life! Lucy is a f***ing door mat half the time and allows people to treat her total crap, then the other half of the time she treats people equally as bad. This was not an enjoyable world to enter. At least 300 pages can be cut from this book giving you the exact same reading experience, in face if it was 300 pages less I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Not a favourite

I forgot what a frustrating character Lucy is. Her low self esteem, her blindness to how she gets treated. Painful at times. OK performance but Daniel's voice made him sound like a dullard.

Not her best.

Whilst I was really really really looking forward to this book...,. I really, really, really had to fast forwarded 50 chapters to get to the end. Predictable, boring, repetitive & childish. A book that seemed forced & draaaaggggeeddd out. Love her other books but I cannot recommend this one.
