Publisher's summary

Count Cassius Mass was the greatest star pilot of the Crius Archduchy. He fought fiercely for his cause, only to watch his nation fall to the Commonwealth. It was only after that he realized the side he'd been fighting for was the wrong one. Now a semi-functional navigator on an interstellar freight hauler, he tries to hide who he was and escape his past. Unfortunately, some things refuse to stay buried and he ends up conscripted by the very people who destroyed his homeland. Their mission for him? Destroy his clone before he's used to rouse the defeated Crius Archduchy from their apathy.

Whoaaaaa!

Well, dayum where to start? This was very well written and intricate, a complete wild ride that I think I may still be on! LOL. Dark, twisted, crazy good characters. This is a Sci-Fi that checked off every box of the checklist, very well done and super interesting.

Sometimes those we trust the most turn out to be our greatest enemy. Sometimes all we thought we knew is taken away.

There's so much going on, I don't know where to start! Loved it, I'll be happily moving on to #2 in the series next!

A load of fun to listen to, really enjoyed it :)

Great dark sci-fi book. Start of a great series.

This book is a great start to what looks to be a good series. Lucifer's Star is set in a dark sci-fi universe where humanity has spread to the stars and brought their darkest problems with them. Take war, slavery, feudal governments, and treachery, and add a dash of aliens and a pinch of cybernetics, and you get a recipe for this grim universe where battles are fought among the stars and entire civilizations hang in the balance.

With humanity on the verge of a conflict that will see empires fall, who are the good guys?

And what does it mean to be human?

Delightful Banter

The title is intriguing, but did not represent what the book was about for me – bit of a misnomer, though there was a hinted-at religious system where Lucifer was their deity.
The characters are well drawn and mostly three dimensional. Some were a hoot, lots of fun. Ida Clair? Awesome.
Plenty of twists and turns in the plot – including the last one, which was both surprising and inevitable, as twists should be.
The banter was the real star. If veered into familiar patterns and cliques a few times – sprinkled with odd anachronisms: Some which works, some which didn’t. Overall it worked well – both to establish character, move the plot and just sprinkled the whole thing with delightful fun.
I liked it very much.

An interesting start to this space opera

An interesting start to detailed and intricate space opera. The story moves along fairly slow, but the world is so layered and the characters so complex that the ending makes for real a lovely mess. Can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes. So much potential and so many directions the story could take. Lucifer's Star is a sci-fi lover's dream wrapped in a shell of slow burn political suspense.

Lucifer's star

Lucifer’s Star is about Cassius Mass, a nobleman fighter pilot who comes to a startling realization about his identity—and from there, the book barrels forward into a series of betrayals and discoveries, each one seeming to end a chapter and compel you forward into the next.

Top Shelf Space Opera

Lucifer's Star is top shelf Space Opera. The story and the narration are exceptional, but Mr. Phipps' prose shines when he is creating deliciously flawed characters. It does not matter where he puts them, it is always easy to feel close to the protagonists. This book is no exception and Cassius will make you feel his loss, duty and responsibility . If you give this series a chance, you will be hooked.
