Publisher's summary

We've all heard the story of the Four Horsemen. Harbingers of the apocalypse. Destruction given form. Four of the sexiest - wait no - forget that. You get my point.

So imagine my surprise when I find out everything I've ever been told, is a lie.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves here. Let's start from the beginning.

My name is Ruby Morningstar. I run a tattoo parlor in Portland with my best friend, have a pet raccoon, a crazy ex who stalks me, not to mention this one little thing...I'm a demon. Half-succubus, to be exact. For the last 23 years of my life, that's the story I believed, but on the day a handsome stranger bails me out of jail my world is turned upside down, and suddenly I don't know who I am anymore.

Because the Four Horsemen aren't the bringers of the apocalypse.

I am.

Talk about never catching a break.

Contains mature themes.

Same old Same old

Like stories about a girl who is destined to be great but has guys constantly saving her? Then this book is for you. This story has been done before and better. I also hate how the book drags on and nothing really happens just so the author can sell you on a series. Stop wasting my time and money. PLEASE JUST WRITE ONE REALLY AWESOME BOOK Y'ALL. instead of 3 drawn out poop fests.

Books 1 and 2 are very fine … 3 & 4, not so much

I waited til I'd listened to all four books..... The first two books in the series were a great pleasure to listen to -- the female protagonist had great depth, paranormal insights, some powers and powers adding, and a fabulously loyal friend. She had four men of various godly types show up to guard her and convince her she had to give up her earthly life and go to hell with them on a mission -- it's a great story line, and the author did a really fun job of writing the first two books in the series. I so admired the female lead's attitude toward the men, who of course oozed sexual appeal, of demanding that they show their worthiness of her sexual attention -- and in the first two books, she held them at bay, demanding their respect of her as an adult, who could make her own decisions. and, unless you like really funky sex scenes spelled out in great detail -- multiple partners, multiple orifices -- you might want to skip book 3 and just go to book 4, if you've already listened to 1 and 2 in the series. The first two books are fun. Three and four are strewn with moaning and sex, alternating with a serious as death mission to hell. See my review of book 3 and 4. The first two books were great - if the author had continued on with the same sassy, woman in control, "prove you are worth my affection" attitude, even with the mission to hell, and continued requiring the men to learn to treat her as an adult capable of rational thought and reasoning, and then finished off book 4 with her acceptance of them and the sexual activities, I'd have five starred all four books all around even with the funky submissive sex … luckily, book four completed the series, as I don't think I could have waded through any more "I love pain" comments, whining for sex, biting til the partner bleeds, etc etc to get to the (actually very satisfactory) conclusion of the book series in book 4.

Great story!

This was a fun story and the narrator was pretty good. My only complaint is that the book seemed to short and I didn’t get to know the characters as much as I would have liked.

Love this series!

I absolutely love this series. I have already read books 1-3 and just had to have the audio version as well. The narrator also did a fantastic job.

TSTL party girl and nonsense plots

Unlikable MC:
Ugh. A TSTL female lead: my most loathed MC. Ruby’s a half succubus, knows it means men are magically drawn to her like catnip, and yet continually goes to bars and places herself in danger. She gets drugged twice and has to be rescued by The Horsemen both times. If she’s not smart or kick-A, then she at least needs to be funny. Unfortunately, the humor and the camp are in short supply. Instead, there’s unnecessary F bombs and awkward, insta-lust between the Four Horsemen and an oblivious Ruby,
who starts down the path of an unearned Mary Sue destiny.

Nonsensical plots:
This is only part one of a “book” broken into four novellas. It merely sets the stage. The central premise,
of Ruby being Lucifer’s daughter and being kept in the dark about it for her entire life, makes zero sense. There’s no point to the secrecy or why the Horsemen are all smitten by her. Book 4 finally explains stuff, in huge info dumps that still make no sense … and by then, I couldn’t be moved to care overly much.

Not hot nooky:
The steamy parts didn’t feel steamy to me: this part 1 has one handsy scene, book 2 has two handsy/mouthy scenes, and book 3 finally sees multiple scenes that go all the way. I got the four “books” together on sale, and therefore finished all of them, but I was overall underwhelmed.

Better books allowing the sassy goodness of narrator Hollie Jackson to shine:
☠️Four Psychos series: reverse harem with better camp, dialogue, and crazy underworld hunger games.
🐾Ready to Were, if RH stuff isn’t necessary and instead you want funny, pulpy UF romance & adventure.

Fun, easy read with great characters.

So I sort of stumbled onto this book entirely by accident and I was honestly pleasantly surprised by it. It DOES seem to have a sort of Reverse Harem situation going on, which normally I'm not real crazy about. However, with that being said, for some reason I didn't mind it at all in this book. it's done in a way that is actually more interesting than most books with this trope.

The characters are really intriguing in this first installment of the series. I love the aspect of demons and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.. but with a slight twist added to keep things interesting and different. I do wish that there was a bit more developement of the actual storyline, but there was just enough revealed to keep me interested, and get me invested in reading book 2. I actually found myself wishing this book was longer as it is only a roughly 4 hour read. Which does have its own pros.. I just happen to enjoy a longer book.

The narrator was pretty great. She does quite a few different accents, and she does them well. She's also really good at reading the male POVs. The writing style is also nice, as the characters feel relatable and it never feels pretentious. Kel Carpenter is a fun writer, who incorporates a lot of personality and humor in her writing.

All in all... this was a nice little surprise of a book. I'm glad I gave it a fair chance, as I'm actually really excited to read book 2 and see where this story goes. I've already bought the audiobook for book 2.

Did not finish

Heroine keeps saying she doesn’t like being told what to do, but she still mostly ends up doing what the love interests want her to do. I hate heroines who claim to be independent but don’t actually act like it.
