Publisher's summary

A stunning reimagining of Homer’s Odyssey set in post-Apocalyptic Los Angeles, written by a master storyteller.

Her life by the sea in ruins, Pen has lost everything in the Earth Shaker that all but destroyed the city of Los Angeles. She sets out into the wasteland to search for her family, her journey guided by a tattered copy of Homer’s Odyssey. Soon she begins to realize her own abilities and strength as she faces false promises of safety, the cloned giants who feast on humans, and a madman who wishes her dead. On her voyage, Pen learns to tell stories that reflect her strange visions, while she and her fellow survivors navigate the dangers that lie in wait. In her signature style, Francesca Lia Block has created a world that is beautiful in its destruction and as frightening as it is lovely. At the helm is Pen, a strong heroine who holds hope and love in her hands and refuses to be defeated.

Beautiful

I enjoy reading everything from Francesca Lia Block and this new book was great. I'm really getting into these writer retelling classics. The way Block portrayed her lead character and gender switching was very clever. Definitely give it a try.

A Homeric Dystoperiffic Dreamland

Oh, Francesca Lia Block, never change.

To be completely honest, I didn't even read the description for this book, so I had no idea what it was actually about until I started listening.

She wonderfully infuses grim dystopia with fairy dust. Love In The Time of Global Warming is a pretty straightforward retelling of the Odyssey, with (as usual, for her) a cast of teenagers, and mad scientists for villains.

It's lush, there's no better word to describe the writing. Smearing fairy dust under your eyes. Richly detailed.

I was never scared - I know the story of the Odyssey, but I loved the diversity of the cast, though at times it was a little too perfect. Block always makes sure to include the weird kids and the queer kids, and this book has them all in spades. I love that she breaks from heteronormativity and writes as if it matters without queerness being the focal point of the story. The journey about love is the story, about remembering your family, and how to get home.

Julia Whalen was a wonderful choice to narrate this dreamland. She gets the dreamy parts, and the exciting parts just right. She never breaks from Pen's truth.

Great Book for the Fantasy Addict

I really love Francesca Lia Block, I read several of her books years ago and she still has that great way of bringing the fantastical to life. This is not a book for people that are looking for a Dystopian Novel or Contemporary Fantasy. Block's books are one of a kind, filled with mythology, high fantasy and other worldly in the midst of a ruined contemporary world.
I personally really liked the book but my reading tastes have changed into liking longer novels instead of fast-paced shorter stories. But for anyone that needs a dose of other worldly fantasy this is an incredible book.

FLB Is LIFE

Would you consider the audio edition of Love in the Time of Global Warming to be better than the print version?

Not sure if it's better than the print version, but kudos to the lovely voice actress who tackles FLB's flowery, often disconnected syntax with emotional grace!

What about Julia Whelan’s performance did you like?

Excellent character voices and a strong female narrator.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Beautiful, undiluted REALNESS!

Any additional comments?

Thank you for your art, Francesca and your committed, complex portrayal, Julia!

Wow, what a disappointment

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Young preteens, but even they are too smart for this convoluted tale.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She does a good job with bad story line and dumb partial characters.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Love in the Time of Global Warming?

Everything, this book is so disjointed it ends up being a waste of time.

Any additional comments?

Francesca Lia Block, you should know better, terrible.
