Publisher's summary

“In my head, I saw myself zipping down the road, checking the map and matching it up with the mile markers I expected. One, two, three, four, five.... I had a good idea of what lay ahead.“

"But life put up a little detour in the form of one beautiful boy with a smile I couldn’t get enough of. That side road wound away, and I couldn’t see beyond the first turn."

Katrina Crawford has a plan for herself, and the first step is getting the heck out of Highland, Iowa. Unfortunately, she still has one year left of high school before she can pursue her dreams of costume design at the college she’s set her heart on.

The problem with plans, though, is that life has its own ideas.

Ethan Clark is king of Rockford Community High School and is so far out of her league, it would be a fantastic joke if she could bring herself to tell it. A triple threat in music and the son of a Christian minister? Yeah, not even in Trina's dreams would he have a reason to speak to her. Ethan, however, seems to see things a little differently.

And he sees her differently, too.

That's gotta be her imagination, though, right?

Life certainly loves a detour, but once you step off the road, how do you get back on?

A fun, light story that draws you in!

I really enjoyed listening to this book and became immediately vested in Trina's character. She underestimates herself yet stays authentic, she's actually a great example for teens girls. A fun, light story that draws you in unexpectedly!

Liked it A Lot :)

It took me a while to finish this book, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it :) it was a really nice break for the brain
The story is about Trina and Ethan and how they are falling in love at their senior year of high school
I really don't know what is it about high school graduation that always gets to me for some reason
I enjoyed this book so much and I really recommend it if you are looking for something So sweet and there is NO DRAMA whatsoever :)
The narrator was really great and I liked that the author was the narrator it gave the book so much life :)

Loved it

I liked this book more then I thought I would. This is a YA book and a lot of the characters from this genre tend to annoy me. Not so in this book. I loved how two people from different ends of the spectrum, bond and come to trust each other.
Would highly recommend.

Great story!!!

I'm glad this is the first book in a series. I loved the writing style and the narration. I don't know how much of the people in book one will be in book two, I'm still all in.

Starla Hutchen is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. The fact that she can narrate her own books is just icing on the cake of wonderfulness. Her stories are character-driven and thankfully, angst-free. In this listen, Kat and Etcetera (Kat's nickname for her beau) were on opposite ends of the high school spectrum - he...popular, talented and loved; her..not so much. I loved how they came to be! They trusted each other with their hurts and I could not get enough. This is YA but it never once felt like it.

I think the best thing Hutchen did, besides penning a great coming-of-age love story, was narrating this book herself. It could have been her insider information that made this book so special.

I love this book!

It really shouldn't have been a surprise to me, that I loved this book. But it was! I do tend to follow an author who genre hops, as Starla Huchton does, so if I love their SF, I'll most likely love their Fantasy, etc, and frankly, I love Starla's writing... but this was really just a straight up teen romance! No little ET's needing to phone home, no pixie dust, and no space battles, but yeah, it's Starla Huchton and her writing is magic that comes from within! My husband thought that I was CrAZy when I downloaded it, but I was willing to give it a try, and I found myself immediately ensorcelled. This story covers Trina's senior year ... Trina wants to be a costume designer, working towards a college scholarship. Behind the scenes, backstage in the school's drama and musical shows, making costumes and making sure the show goes on is Trina's life! There's no time for detours or distractions, but the best laid plans can go far astray, especially when one of those distractions is Ethan, the lead singer and actor in the school's performing arts program... someone she been secretly crushing on since freshman year! With plenty of pop culture references to the costuming world, D&D, and music, I was well and truly captivated!
Add Starla's narration, well... it's almost like she knew the characters and what they were thinking! 💕🤣😊 Starla's simply fabulous at both the writing and the narration in Love Songs, Detours, Et Cetera!

5/5⭐'s across the board!

Sweet Romance

Trina is a loner, and Ethan is the school God. On the surface, it doesn’t seem as if they have much in common. Their hurt runs deep though, and it’s that pain that will bond them in ways they never imagined.

Deep and sweet romance. It’s YA, but the style and context of the story definitely give the impression more of an NA read. The romance flows easily, and I love how the bond between Trina and Etcetera (Trina’s nickname for Ethan) deepens as we get to know the characters. I was a lot like Trina in high school, just one of those people who blurs into the background with the lockers so I could definitely feel every ounce of her curiosity and disbelief about Ethan’s interest in her.

It's always interesting when the author narrates their book. This isn’t my first time listening to one of Miss Hucton’s books, and I always love her ability to bring life to her characters.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
