  • Summary

  • Please note: contains strong language and adult content.

‘Getting lost to find yourself’ stories don’t often involve going to prison with a serial killer. They are also rarely as funny as when celebrated comedian Angella Dravid is at the helm. Love, Rock Bottom & Other Triumphs follows a teen misfit who runs away overseas from an unsettled home to marry a man nearly three times her age. There follows a stint in prison and deportation back home to New Zealand due to an unusual assault conviction. Yet this is a surprising journey of being forced to figure who you are and finding a voice so you can laugh at life’s curve-balls. Angella emerges as a warm, witty woman with a sharp yet generous take on the systems and people that failed her.

Written and narrated by Angella and inspired by her own life story, this Audible Original podcast is produced by Piki Films.

Hilarious and so very human.

I enjoyed this podcast very much. So deeply personal and told with great wit and levity.

She's Getting the Last Laugh

I became acquainted with Angella Dravid through Taskmaster New Zealand. She was so delightful and fun, it is hard to believe the difficulties she endured in her youth.
Like they say in the Q&A, nowadays the results would probably be different. It is infuriating how a young girl was taken advantage of by a predatory older man, but she's made the best of it and has gotten through a stronger person.

Extreme Honesty & Beautifully Expressed

I loved this podcast and hated when the end came. I wanted to continue on an extended journey with Angella...she's amazing! I just really liked her perspective in sharing her experiences. Her ex-husband and the criminal justice failed her horribly...they didn't even try to get it right. The truth is, an upbeat or positive attitude in handling life's ups and downs...and a little ignorance during the process helps the pain of the downs not hurt so much. I hope she does further podcast and I would love to hear her comedy as well. All the best to Angella!

Hits Home

I grew up using the internet to cope and still often do. I ended up running away from home at 15 with a guy ten years my senior so a lot of the notes felt like myself with what happened with Angella. She says it in such a funny lighthearted way when it is reslly dark when you think about it. Which I find myself doing when I talk about ny past because if you do not include one liners and glitter people just get really sad when you don't really intend for that to happen. 😅

Wonderful!

What an epic tale! I’m slightly older than she is, and I cannot believe the injustice she was handed. The punchlines are earned. Stay for the questions!

She's so cool.

I love that she's telling her story, it means a lot to me. Her and I have a lot in common :) Angella was also amazing on Task Master, NZ! Sending love all the way from Las Vegas.

interesting but...

it's presented as a comedy and the vast majority of it just... isn't funny. I stuck with it because I wanted to hear the story and it does pick up a bit in the later episodes but still, don't expect any laugh out loud moments. nothing against the author, I suspect she's funnier in person but this is just an interesting story

An essential listen

I loved this podcast. After recently finishing S1 of Taskmaster New Zealand, I looked up the work of the contestants, this podcast was almost certainly not what I had expected to find, but it was incredible. Funny, heartwarming and at some points difficult to listen to, especially as a white British guy, we do not come off well, our legal system DOES NOT come off well.

Huge thanks to everyone involved in making it, it's given me a lot to think about, and I'll be recommending it to a bunch of people.

A surprising story from Taskmaster NZ comedian

I know of Angella from her quirk task completions in New Zealand Taskmaster.

A down to earth retelling of a surprising, sometimes sad, story. Although a podcast series I listened to most of it all in one go.

Definitely didn't expect where she started her comedy. Well worth a listen!

An audible page turner

A continously surprising and sometimes shocking tale that's narrated with the gentle calm only the protagonist could have. A binge worthy listen featuring the internet, love, prison and redemption.

Thoroughly enjoyed Angella's story. Binge-listened all episodes one after the other as well as the Q&A at the end which nicely tied up the story. Hope there is more....

Absolutely riveting

I listened to Angella's story right through and then couldn't stop thinking about what happened to her for days afterwards.
I can't say anything about the details without potentially detracting from the story that Angella tells so much better. I highly recommend this story and also recommend that you listen right through to the end before you decide that you know what it's about.
Thank you Angella for trusting the audience and telling your story with such an open heart.

Funny and shocking as hell

Can't praise this highly enough. Love Angell's stand up, and had no idea she had this kind of twisted, incredible, thought provoking story in her past. So worth listening to, not for kids, but play it to your teens, especially the girls. Brilliant. She fully deserves all the stars.
