Publisher's summary

Actor, producer, and New York Times best-selling author Rob Lowe offers up a collection of personal stories in an honest and celebratory memoir about men and women, art and commerce, fathers and sons, addiction and recovery, and sex and love.

Actor Rob Lowe is an entertaining raconteur whose best-selling first audiobook, Stories I Only Tell My Friends: An Autobiography, was hailed as "self-deprecatingly funny" (The New York Times) and "thoroughly entertaining" (Time) and earned the author the cover of Vanity Fair.

Love Life serves up another delicious selection of intimate stories and observations from Lowe's life, told with humor, warmth, and brutal honesty. After writing his acclaimed debut effort, Lowe felt he had more stories to share and many more friends to introduce. The result is a touching memoir about the business and craft of acting, the pitfalls of success, family, love, and much more.

Among the many adventures Lowe describes in Love Life are what it's like in the trenches as both the star and producer of a flop TV show; how a visit, as a 20-year-old, to Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion led to a surprise in the hot tub; how an actor prepares for a role, as well as the practical, boots-on-the-ground details no drama or film school would ever teach you. You'll delight at the hilarious account of the time a major movie star stole his girlfriend, and of coaching a kid's basketball team dominated by omnipresent helicopter parents. The story of coming to terms with his son's departure to college for the education his father never got will touch anyone with a family.

Building on Stories I Only Tell My Friends, Love Life is the literary equivalent of returning to a favorite restaurant to savor a completely different, delicious new dish. If you love life, you'll love this audiobook.

Great Read!

Rob Lowe does and amazing job narrating his book. Reminds everyone how short life is and how to take each day anew as we only have a limited supply.

Rob Lowe Rocks

What made the experience of listening to Love Life the most enjoyable?

Rob is not only interesting and articulate, but somehow deeply connects while baring his soul to you. There is nothing phony about him or his books. This is the 2nd one I have listened to and I hope he writes a dozen more.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rob!

Have you listened to any of Rob Lowe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, I listened to his first book and this is every bit as engaging and I could, literally, hardly put it down.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laughing and crying both. And as he so eloquently describes his emotions, I found myself mimicking what I imagined would be his face at the time.

kudos for candor and variety of topics.....

If you could sum up Love Life in three words, what would they be?

compassionate, soulbaring, helpful

What other book might you compare Love Life to and why?

Tommy Lee's Autobiography

Which character – as performed by Rob Lowe – was your favorite?

BILLY IN ST ELMOS FIRE

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I DID...YET I WOULD MAYBE HAVE NOT REACTED OUTWARDLY SO EMOTIONALLY HAD BEEN LISTENING IN THE PRESENCE OF OTHERS..I DID NOT. IT MADE ME LAUGH AUDIBLY AT TIMES, GIGGLE SNICKER AT OTHERS, I AM FOND OF SARCASM AND SELF-DEPRECATING COMMENTS, AND SINCE I DO THIS TO MYSELF, I CAN LAUGH AT OTHERS...ITS A FORM OF ZEN BUDDHISM TO ME.

Any additional comments?

I RECOMMEND THIS AS A VERY GOOD CASE-STUDY IN WHAT CAN ACTUALLY OCCUR TO A PERFECT LOOKING YOUNG MAN RAISED BY HIGH INTELLECT LEVEL ENGLISH TEACHER MOM ( AND YOU DONT HAVE TO BE ONE TO BE ON THAT LEVEL)...HOW IT CAN CAUSE DIFFICULTY FOR HIM TO FIND ACCEPTANCE BY THE JOCKS AND RUGGED ATHLETES. MANY GREAT MOMENTS IN THIS BOOK...

Now I need the first book

If you could sum up Love Life in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, Touching, Insightful

What was one of the most memorable moments of Love Life?

the Big Foot Experience! very funny

Which character – as performed by Rob Lowe – was your favorite?

Him of course. But his relationships with Cheryl and his kids, and with Bernie stood out, and them as the people they are. was also surprised at how much he sounded like the people who's voices he took on when recounting conversations.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both ends of the spectrum of emotions. I'd be driving and cracking up (playboy mansion and big foot spring to mind), or feeling the sadness of when Bernie died, then touched by his feelings for Cheryl and the awesome respect he has for her. Chilled when listening to the events after the Tyson/Holifield fight.

Any additional comments?

I've 'loved' Lowe throughout his career and enjoyed his huge range of characters over the years including playing himself in a funny role on Franklin and Bash. The book has been a great way to learning the other sides to him and increases my respect for him and his talents. Loved the piano music too at the end of the book by his son, beautiful. What a talented family!

Brilliant Follow-Up to “Stories.....”

Rarely have I ever been so engaged in an audiobook than in Rob Lowe’s two recent books.
The stories are great and he is an engaging narrator.
I do hope he considers either writing a book of fiction, or narrates a documentary, or just narrates a Stephen King novel. He’s a pro.
I won’t give it away, but there was a point near the end where my heart just sank. And all I could think is “How could you....?”
Highly recommended to anyone who wants to be entertained, and especially recommend to people in the 50-55 age group. You will no doubt share some of his memories, albeit from a much different perspective. But you will connect with the characters, the culture, and the vibe.
There are times when he was reading about his son going to college, and his ancestry, that I thought he was choking up and holding back the tears.
Finally, I don’t remember when I laughed so hard as when he got to the pert about the Dildo Factory.
5 stars all the way around!

He is a remarkable storyteller

Listening to him tell his real life stories, are so inspirational to me. Although he has lived a life many dream of, Lowe makes you feel that you were practically there during his experiences. I would read/listen anything this man writes.

Awe.....

My favorite chapter is chapter 4 about sending Matthew to college. I have a 14 year old son and although college is a long way off, it felt so close and I cried my eyes out... while on an RV trip with my husband and son!
I loved how real and honest this book was. I read it because I listened to Rob’s interview on the Armchair Expert with Dax S. I didn’t know about the book before. Now I’m telling my friends - especially those who are sending their kids to college this year (and during covid!!).
Anyway thanks for the book Rob Lowe.
