Publisher's summary

War has a way of following some people....

John Eric Carver and Shrek are a retired Navy SEAL war dog team, now living in the mountains outside of San Diego. Both man and dog thought their life was now settled, finding peace on the 40-acre ranch they had moved to. But life, and a mutated virus, changed all that.

Now, they have to survive a worldwide pandemic. Taking refuge in a nearby Boy Scout camp, he leads a group of teens and their parents as they are forced to deal with infected creatures that are rapidly consuming the world. Will John and Shrek survive another war, or will this be the end of the line for the SEAL team?

Awesome

I loved how the animals had voices as well. Couldn’t stop listening to this awesome book.

Excellent prequel...

Great addition to the Extinction Cycle story. Lots of action, good character development, and a nice back story to the series.

A great surprise!

Snagged this on a whim, part of the free Audible selections out there. I didn’t expect much, & that’s what I got. MUCH!

As a zombie survival story, Lost Valley is a cut above & its zombies aren’t the usual shamblers. Better, the main characters, Carver & Shrek, are realistic & interesting in their thought & motivations.

Not gonna lie, I didn’t have high hopes for Bronson Pinchot’s reading. If all you know about the man are his goofy character performances, get past that. He’s got a great voice & does some really good character work. The only glitch is that when voicing women, he goes very “soft” & they kinda come out sounding whiny.

Overall, great story, fantastic audio production.

Good book but narration irritating

I really enjoyed the storyline but the narration was often ear piercing and lame, leaving me debating whether to continue the series which I would have otherwise binged immediately. It’s mainly his delivery of the female character’s voices. They sound so dull and whiny, almost like they’re on the verge of falling asleep. The unnecessary loud anger used for Carver had me not liking him at times as well.

Where I jumped into Extinction Cycle

This was the first book in the Extinction Cycle that I listened to. I enjoyed it and went on to listen to NSS first 3. I had to slog through them, not enjoying, just enduring. I then listened to Walt Brownings 2nd book in the series. Sorry NSS, I like Brownings take on things better. The characters are more engaging and while there is a fair amount of language, it isn’t in the extreme like the other books. I like that his stories are more about the people involved and not quite as gruesome. The deviants in the other books are so ridiculous that I have a hard time taking them seriously.

A solid 8 out of 10.

A pretty good start to what I assume is a new series of books. Not sure if it's the narrator but I found the book a bit too shoutie. The main character comes across as angry/ shouting all the time.

Good, but missed opportunity.

Good story with mostly likable characters. However the one character that everyone should like, or love really, is the dog! But for some reason they made the dog sound like a Euro-trash d-bag. Still scratching my head on that one..I get he’s a Belgian breed...but dude....did you have to make him an insufferable a-hole too?? He sounded like a Hanz & Franz skit...
But that said, it was a solid, albeit standard ES story.
