Nipote di Cosimo, il grande capostipite della famiglia fiorentina, Lorenzo fu educato all'Umanesimo del secolo, e da abile uomo politico riuscì a diventare nel corso della sua breve vita l'ago della bilancia dei potenti italiani e stranieri facendo di Firenze la capitale della nuova arte europea, prestigio che non fu mai più raggiunto dalla città toscana. Lorenzo, oltre ad essere un grande mediatore, fu elogiato per il suo il generoso mecenatismo; aveva infatti infiniti interessi culturali, e fu anche poeta.
Alla sua corte operarono artisti del calibro di Pollaiolo, Botticelli, Verrocchio fino al giovane Michelangelo Buonarroti e Leonardo Da Vinci. Nonostante Lorenzo non fosse mai stato eletto nella carica di Gonfaloniere o di Priore di Firenze, si guadagnò l'appellativo di 'Magnifico' grazie alle virtù messe in mostra col suo operato verso lo Stato, come delineato da Aristotele.
