Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The unfiltered truth about being a rugby player - from the horsey's mouth.

This book is not just about how I got back on my horse and went clippity-clop all the way to the World Cup final in Japan.

It's the story of how a fat kid who had to live up to the nickname Psycho grew up to play (and party) for over a decade with rugby's greatest pros.

From just about surviving the equivalent of 30 car crashes a game and crooning Adele for team spirit, to extensive field notes on the smell of the Scrum and the fine art of on-pitch relief. Then there's rugby's secret naked wrestling scene and how it was exposed.

In my world, you never know how the ball will bounce....

That was a struggle to finish. I decided to chose this book as I liked Joe's podcast that he has started. This however was tired and sadly pretty shallow except for the mental health chapter. If you have listened to various rugby podcasts you would have heard the majority if the "crazy" rugby stories being rehashed over and again. Bit disappointed as it felt like another one of these books.

Amazing storytelling!

I wasn't familiar with Joe Marler besides his impressive playing as an england prop. This story is touchingly raw and honest, but even more, well told and funny. Listening to his voice doing aaalll the accents is hilarious and had me and my husband howling at parts. It feels like spending a night in his company. Awesome read! Highly recommended!

Top Drawer

A fantastic read (or listen). I can relate to many of the topics included, outside of the whole elite, world class rugby player thing. Thanks, Joe!

I loved this!

This book was wonderful! Maybe because I was a prop in college I knew what to expect - but this book was exactly what I expected. Disappointed it got so many poor reviews. Joe does a great job reading it too!

Absolute killer

I've always searched for a rugby book that was inspiring and Joe marler killed it. This book made me love the game more, but also look at myself as a person. His honesty of personal hardships is a eye opener, and makes me want to do better for myself, not only as a person but as a player and a dad.

Storytelling that made me laugh out loud.

If you like rugby even a little bit, listen to this book. Joe's stories and voice-overs were often the highlight of my day. Incredibly honest, vulnerable and insightful.

Changed my mind completely

As a dedicated Welsh fan, I have always disliked Joe Marler. However, after listening to Joe tell his story in such an engaging, funny, and even touching way, I dislike him a lot less. I even like his voice. He did a great job narrating the book. I highly recommend this book to any sport fan, but especially any rugby fan.

Really enjoyed this book.

I pre ordered this book the same time as James Haskells and listened to James Haskells first and was worried I wouldn't be able to follow that with this book. I really enjoyed this book and think it is well worth a read. again if you are into rugby you will enjoy this book. fair play Joe!!

Playing the game

I played rugby Union from the early sixties through to mid seventies, I never enjoyed watching rugby but loved playing the game, when injury forced me to stop and began watching the game in earnest and if I could get the occasional ticket for the international I was happy, I have just read Jo Marlers book, and I know how much the game has improved since it has now gone professional, but I do wonder the vast amount of alcohol some of these England super stars consume during there tours representing England, I would have thought with all the training and fitness required they would have been more responsible for their performance and their bodies.
Thank you loved the book Jo.

Not sure why it exists as a book, yet brilliant!

Q: Do you need to buy and then listen to this book? No. Does it really provide you with anything meaningful, or fill gaps in your library with words of wisdom? Also, no. I honestly can't even think why he would write this and then read it. There's no real point to it. And yet, it is seriously a good book, and I could not stop listening to it. It really is expertly read and written to be engaging, not to mention extremely funny in parts (like actually thinking about something he read some hours later and laughing to my self at my desk at work, sort of extremely funny re: "Ennnggllaaannnd plaaaaayeerrr" (listen to get that reference). It's a 5 star read for me, and I'm buying the hard copy for reads later, although the commentary really does add to this performance. Thanks Joe, for writing and reading the book.

Great listening

coming from an Irish rugby union fan, this books is great. Joe is a breadth of fresh air and has a very good way of story telling. I throughly enjoyed it and listening to the old days of touring and banter. England are still shit btw

a cracker of a book.

always a fan of watching Joe play for England and after listening to this book, am more of a fan of Joe the man. a great book, funny, poignant and well read. touches on great topics, not only about rugby but about stuggles as a man, a father and a husband. well worth a listen. brings back great memories of Japan RWC 2019 and my memories of my own trip there as well as the loss soon after of my dad who i shared the trip with. much respect Joe and thanks for sharing all your great and not so great stories.

Good listen

Enjoyed listening to this. Lots of funny stories behind the games in the locker room during tours. Sometime the F bombs were a bit much but other times played its purpose and was very funny. If you're a UK rugby fan you'll appreciate the local context better than us southern hemisphere rugby fans. But there was enough there for me to understand and appreciate the funny side of life for a rugby player. Recommend.
