Publisher's summary

After bombs explode during an anarchist attack in Long Spoon Lane, two of the culprits are captured and the leader is shot... but by whom? As Thomas Pitt of the Special Branch delves into the case, he finds that there's more to the terrorism than the brutality of misguided idealists. Clues suggest that Inspector Wetron is the mastermind. As the shadowy leader of the Inner Circle, Wetron is using his influence with the press to stir up fears of more attacks and to rush a bill through Parliament that would severely curtail civil liberties. To defeat Wetron, Pitt must run in harness with his old enemy, Sir Charles Voisey. The unlikely allies are joined by Pitt's clever wife, Charlotte, and her great aunt, Lady Vespasia Cumming-Gould. As they strive to prevent future destruction, nothing less than the fate of the British Empire hangs in precarious balance.

Too long

The story line and plot was marvelous, but too long to get to the end. It was a brilliant ending but I had to skip pages to make it to the end. I also hate that Pitt is portrait weaker these days in the books. He seems to be struggling and can't seem to make it big. He's a hero though....

Excellent plot line, suspenseful, gripping.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Tension! Master villains!

Did Jenny Sterlin do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Not as well as past narrators.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Villain

Any additional comments?

Reat the prior series book, Southhampton Row, first!

Took a 10+ year break with these. Picked up where I left off. Great fun.

Another fabulous story.

Loved it!! I've listened to all available of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series and this is one of the best. The surprising revelations about the characters, and the suspenseful events will keep one on the edge. Good narrator as well. no disappointment in this story.
