The summer of 1939 turned out to be the last summer of author Lucy Lipiner's childhood. On September 1, when she was six years old, her parents roused Lucy and her older sister from their beds, and with other relatives in tow fled their town of Sucha and the invasion by Nazi Germany.

Their journey of survival was not easy, and in Long Journey Home: A Young Girl's Memoir of Surviving the Holocaust, from the perspective of that young girl, Lucy (Lusia) narrates her family's story. From her sheltered life in a small town at the foothills of Tatra Mountains to her time as a barefoot and hungry little girl in Siberia and Tajikistan in central Asia, and finally her arrival in America, this memoir shares the emotional details and the physical struggles of a 10-year flight to freedom.

An extraordinary story of resilience, Long Journey Home is a detailed, historical account of a little known and rarely discussed group of Holocaust survivors.

Where does Long Journey Home rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love this audiobook so much. Lucy Lipiner's voice is so beautiful and comforting as she tells of the horrific things she experienced with her family. I can't even put into words how much it means to me to hear her tell her own story in her own voice. I cried more than once and I laughed, surprisingly, more than once.

What other book might you compare Long Journey Home to and why?

Night, by Elie Weisel and Diary of a Young Girl by Ann Frank. These, along with Lucy's book, get under your skin and stay with you forever.

What does Lucy Lipiner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The authenticity of her voice, her inflection, accent and tone are exquisite.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The holocaust story you've never heard

Any additional comments?

I so appreciate the fact that Lucy and other holocaust survivors are recording their stories. It's so urgent and important that we know the depths of human suffering that goes on when someone in power is dangerous and a society can't see until it's too late. Thank you to Lucy (and all of the survivors) for her courage and selflessness in sharing her journey in such poignant prose and exceptional detail.

A completely new perspective of WWII. A different angle. I am always looking to discover new angles from different survivors' experiences. More people must strive to educate themselves.

I just wish someone else had read it!

I’ve read more holocaust survivor memories than I can count but I’ve never experienced a memoir in this way. The narrator is the author - while it is always a privilege to read a survivors memoir, it is truly a beautiful experience to hear it from their mouth.

Beautiful!
