Publisher's Summary

Paul Rainey, an ad salesman, perceives dimly through a fog of psychoactive substances his dissatisfaction with his life - professional, sexual, weekends, the lot. He only wishes there was something he could do about it.

And 'something' seems to fall into his lap when a meeting with an old friend and fellow salesman, Eddy Jaw, leads to the offer of a new job.

But when this offer turns out to be as misleading as Paul's sales patter, his life and that of his family are transformed in ways very much more peculiar than he ever thought possible.

London and Brighton come alive

I read a review of another Szalay book but decided to start at the beginning with London and the South East. This is a great book, refreshing, original, funny, tragic, great writing and superb narration. Even though the story slips into the surreal at times it is still very plausible. The scene settings are spot on and anyone who has lived and/or worked in London, Brighton or Hove will instantly recognise the location. I loved it.

Just great

I came to this having read and enjoyed the author’s latest two books last year. This one was just hilarious from start to finish. Full of great set pieces. Among many examples I could single out, the ‘Sir Trewor’ scene is a gift that will keep on giving.
