Publisher's Summary

Ninety-one-year-old Alice Hoffman died alone in her top floor flat. Social services say she slipped through the cracks in a failing system. But detectives Arthur Bryant and John May of the Peculiar Crimes Unit have their suspicions. Mrs. Hoffman was not as innocent as she appeared. A former government security expert, she had once worked for their own unit, but there's no one left who can remember her. When they uncover a link between her and a diplomat desperate to leave the country, it begins to look as if someone might have committed an impossible murder.

But Mrs. Hoffman wasn't acting alone. Arthur Bryant is convinced that a group of talented women have been working together for decades and now the others are in danger. With the help of some of his more certifiable contacts and historical experts, he and John May embark on an investigation that will lead them down forgotten alleyways to riverside buildings and on to the city's oldest bridge. But just when the case appears to have been solved and unit chief Raymond Land can congratulate everyone on ending a threat to international security, the detectives discover that they've been the victims of the biggest deception of all. For even after her death, Mrs. Hoffman would prove too clever for them....

Bryant & May's 20th anniversary case brings an ending and a new beginning to London's most peculiar crimes unit and all who work there.

I have thoroughly enjoyed these stories

but the audio is so phenomenal strictly due to Tim Goodman's performance of the cast. He has been amazing and has brought these unique characters to life in such a way that you can picture them perfectly. Bravo!!

Another spectacular book

I have enjoyed every one of the Brian and May books. Most I have read but the last few have been on audible. Wonderful books and narration. These are some of the best characters ever.

It can’t be over

I have loved Bryant and May since the beginning, and cannot believe this is the end. The characters, the history, the quirky stories, the wonderful writing, have all enlivened my life, and I sincerely hope that Christopher Fowler really does have something up his sleeve, where the PCU is concerned. Thank you, Mr Fowler, for these really amazing books, and thank you, Mr Goodman, for your excellent narration, which, together with the author’s descriptions, have really brought these characters to life.

The best kept secret in literature!

I have been reading / listening to these books since the first book was released. At the end of each book, I feel genuinely bereft! I live in fear that each will be the last and I’ll loose the company of characters I have come to love like a cosy dysfunctional family :-)
The complex yet simple storylines, the wonderful characterization, the hidden history of London contained within each installment, the genius of the narration in the audible versions, all combine to give the reader / listener a truly wonderful literary experience. I’ve put off writing a review for years as I liked the feeling of being in on a secret known only to a few - but Christopher Fowler deserves to be a household name and so I’ve decided to do my bit!

Full Circle

i could listen to these stories just for the beautiful writing and the history and geography of London, but I've also come to love the characters. At first, I thought the stories were a bit too far fetched, even a bit silly, but Christopher Fowler's skill is to build complex mysteries into his books without losing the element of fun.
This story takes the reader back to the foundation of the Unit and gives Bryant the opportunity to annoy people on both sides of the Atlantic.

A rollercoaster of emotions…

I detest spoilers, so all I will say is that as per usual, Bryant and May were as convoluted and peculiar as usual, but with a huge ramp up on the emotional rollercoaster we are often taken on. Have no fear, the laughs are still there too!

Overlong and a little tedious.

Definitely overlong and I have up towards the end. I have always enjoyed Bryant a d May so was disappointed with the last book in the series. Performance as good as ever though.

Heartbreakingly wonderful.

I think we knew this one would be tough, going in.
What to say... wonderful book.
One highlight was definitely Raymond growing a spine, finally. Because we all love him and wanted him to succeed at something.
I've grown to adore Bryant and May over the years and what will I have to look forward to now?
Even one or two uncharacteristic mispronunciations from Tim Goodman weren't enough to bounce me out of the narrative. He is Bryant and May now.
I hope there will be something new and comforting soon, as promised, Mr Fowler!
Meanwhile, I'm off to grieve.
