About the Creator

Maria is a native New Yorker, living in Los Angeles, who writes for both live action and animation. Her writing credits include Grey’s Anatomy, Hulu’s East Los High, plus Madagascar: A Little Wild for Dreamworks, and Disney’s Elena of Avalor!
Maria is a first generation Latina raised in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood. Yes, she was raised in The Heights! And it was exactly the way Lin-Manuel Miranda portrayed it—complete with abuelas spying over the neighborhood from their windowsill; Bodega owners chasing graffiti artists; and Latino kids with big dreams. Maria spent her summers in Miami and Puerto Rico, with family, food, music, and politics. It wasn’t really a summer vacation—it was full-on immersion of the language and culture. And, although she didn’t fully appreciate it as a kid, she does now, which is why she sends her teenaged daughter to Miami every summer! Maria hopes to see her daughter start appreciating this circle-of-life thing.
Maria has written original movies for Lifetime, Disney Channel, and wrote the indie film Rum and Coke, which she also directed. She developed a half hour single cam pilot for Nickelodeon, and recently developed an hour-long dramedy pilot for ABC.
Maria has also written for animated kids shows like Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Go! and the upcoming Santiago Of The Seas; Disney Channel’s Elena of Avalor, T.O.T.S, and Special Agent Oso; Universal Kids’ Nina’s World, which earned Maria a Humanitas Award nomination; Amazon’s If You Give A Mouse A Cookie; Netflix’s upcoming What-To-Doodles! and Madagascar: A Little Wild for Dreamworks—soon airing on Hulu and PeacockTV. In addition, she has also created and developed original pilots for streamers, cable and production companies.
Maria is currently writing an Audible Podcast series for Highlights Magazine for Children, and is a writer/story editor on a new animated TV series for 9 Story Media/PBS Kids. Maria has a degree in film from NY’s School of Visual Arts, studied screenwriting at NYU, playwriting at The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, and earned a TV Writing Fellowship from ABC/Disney. Maria served as Chair of the Latino Writers Committee at the WGAW for 5 years, and teaches writing at USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Representation Matters!

I played this podcast for 4 and 6 yr old I nanny and they LOVED it (as did I)! Episode 3 made me tear up because Lola’s bilingualism was her superpower that saved the day; the little brown 4 year old girl in me felt validated and seen. I wish I could have been exposed to this as a child and grew up seeing my ethnicity as an asset, and not something to minimize and secretly wish it wasn’t there.

The music and performances are incredible and so grateful this podcast exists. We can’t wait for more episodes!

Fun for bedtime

My 4 year old thinks this is great. Usually we listen to Spanish stories, this one is a mix of Spanish and English, more English.

Great For Car Travel

Listened to this in a car ride with the kids. Abuelita’s voice and singing immediately calmed me. Really nice balance of Spanish and English for all of us in the car! Not annoying and cheerful without being overdone.
