Publisher's Summary

This is the first of three young adult novels from New York Times best-selling author Mackenzi Lee that explores the untapped potential and duality of heroism of popular characters in the Marvel Universe.

Before the days of going toe-to-toe with the Avengers, a younger Loki is desperate to prove himself heroic and capable, while it seems everyone around him suspects him of inevitable villainy and depravity...except for Amora. Asgard's resident sorceress-in-training feels like a kindred spirit - someone who values magic and knowledge, who might even see the best in him.

But when Loki and Amora cause the destruction of one of Asgard's most prized possessions, Amora is banished to Earth, where her powers will slowly and excruciatingly fade to nothing. Without the only person who ever looked at his magic as a gift instead of a threat, Loki slips further into anguish and the shadow of his universally adored brother, Thor.

When Asgardian magic is detected in relation to a string of mysterious murders on Earth, Odin sends Loki to investigate. As he descends upon 19th-century London, Loki embarks on a journey that leads him to more than just a murder suspect, putting him on a path to discover the source of his power - and who he's meant to be.

Critic Reviews

"Narrator Oliver Wyman embodies everyone's favorite trickster god in this exciting origin story for Marvel's Loki of Asgard.... Wyman takes on the central role of Loki with relish, emphasizing his teenaged sarcasm and petulance while subtly exposing the self-doubt underlying them. He excels at the rapid shifts of tone such a changeable character requires. Wyman also creates memorable voices for the supporting characters - from dim but affable Thor and sly sorceress Amora to the plummy accents of England's Sharpe Society members. Listeners will love this magical adventure." (AudioFile magazine)

A Journey Into Mystery, this isn’t

Best word to describe it for me would be disappointing. If you’re looking for a sword and sorcery romp through mysteries and fog swept London streets, you’ll be disappointed. This is a teen fiction romance novel, plain and simple. I don’t read this genre that often but even I can tell that it’s not written very well either. Every character feels hollow and only there to fill a certain niche in the story or arc of the main character. Loki doesn’t come across as the rogue we all love. They even have the Enchantress, a great Thor villain, come across as a pretty hollow representation. They could have done much more with these characters but instead it feels like a lot of it is spent harping on the feelings between them. There’s a pointless romance in the grand scheme and worst of all, there isn’t really a scheme. Loki lies of course, but his lie kind of invalidates a lot of the story by the end. There is little to no Mischief here.

WOW!!!!

As someone who really never writes reviews, I owed it to this story. Wasn’t quite sure what to expect but the voice acting of the narrator it plus the inherently exciting content of this book make it a must read for any Thor/Loki fans. The author presents the duality or Loki without forcing one to call him either good or evil, and masterfully weaves a story that leaves it up to the reader to answer the question.

A unexpected delight.

when I picked up the book I had no idea what I was getting myself into. so to my suprise it gave me what I wanted without giving me the ending I expected. kinda sherlock meets marvel. you never really know where the plot will take you just like how loki never truly knows what he wants. Cannot wait for the next one.

wasn't sure at first

I wasn't sure at first what to expect, this is definitely different from what I had expected for the storyline. I was very impressed in the end though. Some of the chapters were slow, but the last few really had me trapped on audible, not able to turn it off.

Loki

This story felt a lot more like a fanfiction than anything actually endorsed by Marvel. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't Loki.

Not bad

Definitely more in the classy of young adult, not a very deep book but well written for what it is. Predictable ending. Characters are defined and preformed well by the narrator. I greatly enjoyed the storyline! Would make for a great movie. I can see Eddie Redmayne cast as the friend Loki makes on earth. Would be amazing if they did that!

Dissatisfied

To have such source material and still be lacking in so many aspects! I really hope the next one is much better and fit in better with the Loki we already know and I've come to love. Seriously so disappointed
