Everyone comes to jazz in their own way and growing up for me, that pathway to jazz came via the clarinet, bass clarinet and alto clarinet which I will not be playing for you on today’s show.

So when Todd Marcus and Virginia MacDonald made an appearance on our stage, it was a must attend for me. And they didn’t disappoint.

Todd Marcus’ straight-ahead bass clarinet playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. His music swings hard with both a fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility. Marcus’ compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage.

But wait, there’s more! Todd is joined by Toronto based clarinetist Virginia MacDonald. A lauded clarinetist in her own right, Virginia has performed and composed on over a dozen Juno Award winning albums and helps lead the Canadian Jazz Collective.

Featuring Eric Kennedy on Drums, Steven Arnold on Bass, Hannah Mayer on Piano, Virginia MacDonald on Clarinet and Todd Marcus on Bass Clarinet, from July 12th, 2023, it’s the Todd Marcus Quintet featuring Virginia MacDonald – Live at the Bop Stop.

New York City based Natalie Cressman is a singer/songwriter and trombonist who draws inspiration from a vast array of deep and powerful musical currents. She released her 5th album in April 2019, this time in collaboration with Brazilian composer, guitarist and vocalist Ian Faquini.

Drawing from impressionism, jazz, and the great Brazilian songwriting tradition, Setting Rays of Summer is a ten-track collection of original material featuring compositions in three different languages: Portuguese, English and French. With the warm instrumentation of acoustic guitar and trombone alongside two-part vocal harmonies hugging the Brazilian-accented Portuguese, Cressman & Faquini weave their musical voices together to create a fully orchestrated sound befitting a much larger ensemble, and you’ll hear much of that material on this program.
