Publisher's Summary

Meet Cathy Connolly - cop, kickboxing champion and now a soon-to-be mother....

Detective Garda Cathy Connolly's life has taken an unexpected turn. Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, Cathy's trying to decide how she's going to balance motherhood with the very real dangers of life on the job, especially when her latest case isn't as straightforward as it first appears.

Called to what seems like a routine break-in, Cathy discovers the bones of a baby concealed in the hem of an old wedding dress. When the dress' original owner, Lavinia Grant, is found dead in a Dublin suburb, Cathy is drawn deep into a complex web of secrets and lies spun by three generations of women.

Meanwhile, a fugitive killer has already left two dead in execution style killings across the Atlantic - and now he's in Dublin with old scores to settle. Can the team track him down before he kills again? Struggling with her own secrets, Cathy doesn't know how dangerous - and personal - this case is about to become....

great story!

Loved the many parts of this story! And the narrator is fantastic! Found this book by searching the narrator, and am downloading the next in the series now!

Amazing Suspense and Character Development!

This is the first time in a long while that an author so utterly pulled the rug out from under me with a truly clever plot twist! These characters are made for TV (and I mean that as a sincere compliment)...the players have layers of depth that can be teased out for many novels to come. Thank you, Sam Blake, for a true escape into the world of the Irish Guarda (or Guardi??). And as always, Aoife McMahon was brilliant in her narration...she truly brought your characters to life!

Don't waste your time

The author has tried too hard to be clever. There are too many characters in little mini plots. All eventually tie together but it is poorly done. Does not create suspense, only confusion. I found the book pretty boring.

Not a conclusive book

I found this book to be a bit annoying. The main character is pregnant and a kick boxer.. she workouts out kick boxing but is afraid of running while pregnant... And she can't think straight because she is pregnant... and she can basically control her vomiting... Vomits only when convenient.

The accents are not well done.

And this ends like the first section of a book, not like an entire book... the story doesn't conclude, not even close. So I don't think it is worth starting.

AWFULL!!!!

I got to chapter 24 before I finally decided that I had had enough. I should have bailed out at chapter two.
Boring story, boring characters. "You will not be able to put it down" the cover said. I should never have picked it up.
One of the very few books I will be requesting a credit for.

dumb, soapy, melodramatic and ends on cliffhanger

also, this is not this book's worst offence, but oooof, the accents are borderline hate crime.

Clumsy and irritating

I really wanted to like this book but finished only because I am self isolating due to the coronavirus. I am a fan of other crime writers whose work is set in Ireland but this was such an unsophisticated example of the genre. Listening as I walked outside, I nearly yelled a few times about obvious questions that should have been asked, steps that of course would have been taken and other actions that seemed merely plot contrivances to make things come out the way the author wanted. The heroine, Cat Connolly, is simply not believable as a mid 20s year old champion kick boxer who also almost lost her life defending another policeman, who is already a detective and who is now pregnant from a one night stand. Way too much time spent on the pregnancy, followed by a surprise reveal at the very end as to who was the father. It is not fair for an author to strew so many red herrings!. Several plots all going at once that conveniently come together in a way that strains credulity. The narrator was good but she had little to work with. I cannot recommend this series.

Terrible Ending

Love the narrator and the plot. However, there were far too many loose ends and unresolved plot lines. I get it, this is the first book of an eventual series. Ending the book in this way forces the reader to crave the next book in the hope of getting some answers. But for me, it had the opposite effect. I feel duped as there was no payoff for the reader of this book; therefore, I can’t trust the author to deliver on the next book. Finally, although the plot was good, stylistically there was too much “telling”. As we’ve been told by all of our writing teachers and professors, at least when it comes to fiction: “show, don’t tell”. Far too much telling compared to showing in this book.

Give it a chance!

The first hour or two I was a little lost as to what was happening. There were so many characters I couldn’t make head nor tail. However it all started to come together and it was bloody brilliant! Already have the next book in the series downloading. I live very close to where this book is set so it’s very eerie for me but I loved it.

Excellent

I have purchased all 3 and all 3 have been immensely enjoyed. I'm just on my 2nd listen. I pray there's going to be more. One cares for all the characters and I feel they can be taken much further. Thank you for a very pleasing listen x

Sam Blake hits a blinder!

Fantastic audiobook! The characters were real and the book captured me from the beginning. The best praise I can give a book is is how quickly I finish it. This outstanding book was finished in two sittings. I only stopped to sleep! I read mainly detective thrillers, and this one of the best! Coming to Ireland from the States 35 years ago, I thought these brave people were amazing to actually do the majority of their job without a gun! They have an amazing ability to calm situations with just talking. This book has given me a little more insight to how things are handled in the big city.

Didn't hold my interest

Great performance but a pretty dull and meandering story. I think the main problem was with the characters - Most of whom were very stereotyped and unlikeable. I held no sympathy for the one dimensional helpless heroine Zoe or the typical do gooder Emily. The only female character who appeared to have the slightest depth was Kathy and even she was a bit of a stereotype on the tough female cop front.

Not as good as I hoped.

First of all I would like to say this is the first book i am reading from this author, so I didn't know what to expect. This review is my own personal views and you may not agree with it and thats' ok.

The book has a good start setting the scene. 60% in the book we still haven't gone deep into the story. It feels slow paced and not much information provided to solve the 'crime' if there was one. The characters have holes, for example the detective and protagonist starts of as appearing to be a strong woman with her kickboxing training halfway through the book she is chasing a suspect and she is thinking a pregnant woman shouldn't be chasing people...whats with that, she is few weeks into the pregnancy and she had no issues training twice a day. Yes we get it all way through the book that she wants to throw up.

Relationships: The relationships between the characters are not clear enough, which makes the story not gel together. She doesn't tell the guy she had a one stand with that she is pregnant till the very end. It is implied that there is some kind of past between her and her superior but we get nothing on that apart from some reference that he is close to her personal space bs and the smell of his aftershave. I believe there should have been more in depth build up of that relationship, it all seemed to be scratching the surface.

Mary: the older woman, when everyone finds out her name is Grace continue to call her Mary, as if it's so hard to call her by her actual name, its not like they knew her for years.

Zoe: When the police find out that Zoe's mother has been dead for years they do not have the courtesy to inform Zoe. The whole 'scared and lonely woman' like Zoe character that gets rescued by the tall blonde 'player' guy who feels he needs to protect her is so blasé and old fashioned.

If only some of the bones of the baby have been sewn in the dress what happened to the rest of the bones? The author never tells us.

Cliffhanger at the end: thankfully I read this book a good few years after it was written and found out what happens to the main character in the next book summary. I doubt I will be reading the next books in the series, this just didn't do it for me.

Very repetitive and slightly cringe-worthy

I read the reviews before downloading but the story sounded interesting so I ignored the comments that the ending is not great....but I agree the ending is rubbish. Also it could have done with some more editing as it repeats the same information over and over again. I felt like shouting ‘ I know already...move on! Lastly the romantic storyline was cringe-worthy and sounded like a bad romance novel, it was completely out of place and unnecessary.

Good overall story, no ending

I enjoyed the story quite a bit but felt short changed by the ending. It felt a bit rushed after how much time had been spent building it all up.
