Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit.

The classic love story takes place on the De la Garza ranch, as the tyrannical owner, Mama Elena, chops onions at the kitchen table in her final days of pregnancy. While still in her mother's womb, her daughter to be weeps so violently she causes an early labor, and little Tita slips out amid the spices and fixings for noodle soup. Critic Reviews

"A tall-tale, fairy-tale, soap-opera romance, Mexican cookbook, and home-remedy handbook all rolled into one, Like Water For Chocolate is one tasty entree from first-time novelist Laura Esquivel." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Scrumptious Mexican Folk Tale for Adults

My sweetheart and I listened to this audiobook on cassette tapes borrowed from the library almost 20 years ago just after it was released, and savored every moment. (This time through I liked it only slightly less well, mainly because the ending felt rushed and didn't match up with my 20-year-old memory of how the story ended.) It definitely held up overall for a second listen, and someday I'll probably give it a third listen. This story is part adult fairy tale/folk tale, part cookbook, part steamy love story, part home remedy recipe book...it's delicious and nutritious and yes, the ending is weird, but that's okay. You're gonna love it anyway.

Special note for those trying to figure out which version to buy: YOU DEFINITELY WANT THIS ONE. Yes, this version is abridged, but in this case the abridged version is more authentic and satisfying because the narrator is Latina and perfect for the material. This definitely needs to be read by a native Spanish speaker; DO NOT waste your money or a credit on the unabridged version read by an Anglo. Besides, this time through I liked the story enough to buy the Kindle book so I could see what-all was cut out for the abridged audiobook, and it felt like hardly anything was.

Grade: B+ or A-
Bechdel test: Pass.

Great story, sound quality not so much.

I loved the story; magical without being too out there. I also really liked Yareli Arizmendi's voice - she gave the characters real lives and feelings. The problem with the book is that the sound quality is poor. It's distorted and the background music and sound effects sometimes makes the narrator hard to hear.

I'd recommend this book, but only if it's on sale. The quality just isn't quite there.

Lovely abridged recording.

The story is enchanting, but as I followed along with the book I realized it was abridged. That surprised me because it's a very short novel, and it wasn't clearly posted as an abridged recording. It doesn't take away too much from the story, especially because Arizmendi did such a lovely job reading it! I was really glad there was a version available where the reader had a Spanish accent. Despite the small missing passages, I would still buy it again.

meh

Loved the reader. Wasn't my genre. It reminds me of fifty shades of grey, which seemed to be everyone's favorite but mine.

AWESOME

Laura Esquivel has not disappointed. Years ago I saw the movie and I couldn't wait to read the book. NOT DISAPPOINTED. My favorite is The Law of Love...as I am a romantic.

Beautiful . Don’t miss this narration. Highly recommended

An immeasurable treasure of literature... And The narrator makes the story come alive with her rich and perfect voice (truly, without her voice this story would be lost). This tells an important tale of occasional fantasy, love, and the greatest riches of a family: a kitchen. I became lost— in the most beautiful ways— into each of the recipes.. celebrating the grace and power and beauty of a rich, and noble people...

What a beautiful performance

Such a moving story couldn’t have been narrated a better way.
This performance makes you feel like it’s actually being told by Esperanza’s daughter!

Beautifully Weird and Magical

I don't often fly through books and even though this one isn't very long, I couldn't stop. This was also wonderfully read by Yareli.
