Im schönen Land Prix, wo es noch Kobolde, Vampire und feuerspeiende Drachen gibt, lebt in einem kleinen Haus der Zauberer Tino Prax, ein lustiger Bursche mit langem Haar und großen Ohren. Da er in der Schule nicht richtig aufgepasst hat und überhaupt etwas schusslig ist, passiert es ihm oft, dass er beim Hexen etwas verwechselt. Zum Beispiel zaubert er Lela Hundertschön, die von ihm verehrt wird, Blumen in die Wohnung, die so große Büsche bilden, dass sie alle Zimmer ausfüllen. Lela muss immer wieder den Zauber-Reparaturdienst um Hilfe bitten, worüber sie sehr erzürnt ist. Sie will nichts mehr von Tino wissen und beginnt lieber ein Studium an der "Höheren Schule für Ahnenspuk".
Der Zauberer ist darüber sehr traurig, möchte gar nicht mehr leben. Doch dann beschließt er, sich einen kleinen Gefährten herbeizuhexen, einen sprechenden Hund. Aber wie vorauszusehen, bringt er wieder etwas durcheinander, und so sitzt ihm plötzlich ein kleines Krokodil gegenüber. Geschockt versucht er es loszuwerden, doch das kluge Tier hat etwas dagegen.
Krokodilkind ist unternehmungslustig und erstaunlich gewitzt, sein "Papa" möchte es schon bald nicht mehr missen. Dabei hat es die kleine Echse mit diesem Zauberer, der einen aus Versehen an die Decke klebt und sich selbst in einen Bottich hext, wirklich nicht leicht. Doch die beiden werden Freunde, und als Lela Hundertschön plötzlich verschwindet, ohne dass man weiß, weshalb und wohin, machen sie sich unverzüglich auf die Suche. Ein gefährliches Unterfangen beginnt, bei dem sie es mit wilden Hornissen, Riesenschlangen, Drachen und vor allem dem Meister aller Hexer, Wassilow Dongi, zu tun bekommen, der sich für den größten Magier im Lande Prix hält und für Lela ein schreckliches Schicksal vorgesehen hat. Doch die beiden finden auch Verbündete wie die gestrenge Schuldirektorin Tramora, die ihre ganz besonderen Gründe hat, gegen Dongi zu kämpfen, und sie wissen sich vor allem immer wieder selbst zu helfen.
Spannende Abenteuer und eine Menge Überraschungen hält diese fantasievolle Geschichte für den Hörer bereit. Mit dem schussligen Zauberer Prax und seinem schlagfertigen Freund Krokodilkind hat der Autor ein Gespann geschaffen, das Kindern wie Erwachsenen ans Herz wächst.
