What if the key to great leadership lies not in how you lead, but in how you prepare before stepping into the role?

In Left of Leadership, Scott Stalker reveals the often-overlooked foundations that determine success or failure as a leader. Drawing from his remarkable journey—rising from a challenging childhood to a decorated 30+ year career in the Marine Corps and serving as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for the Defense Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, Cyber Command, and Space Command—Stalker shares the critical steps to prepare for leadership before it begins.

This book isn’t about management theories or buzzwords. It’s about the human elements of leadership: developing character, building trust, and leading with love—a profound message from a Marine Corps combat veteran who believes that genuine care and investing in others are the cornerstones of effective leadership.

Through raw personal stories, hard-earned lessons, and actionable insights, Left of Leadership offers a blueprint to:

  • Cultivate emotional intelligence and resilience.
  • Develop personal integrity and ethical decision-making.

  • Lay the groundwork for authentic, impactful leadership.

Whether you’re early in your career, considering military service, or ready to step into any organizational leadership role, this book reveals the tools and mindset needed to thrive as a leader.

Retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Scott Stalker’s first book is superb. It reinforces “brilliance at the basics” for experienced leaders while laying a strong foundation for those just beginning their leadership journey.

Scott’s story is compelling. From humble beginnings to advising leaders at the highest levels of the military, his path shows what is possible when you learn the principles and execute them consistently.

What may surprise some readers, especially coming from a Marine, is the emphasis on emotional intelligence, integrity, and trust. Do what you say you will do. Build relationships before asking for help. Foster trust in every interaction.

Scott draws on real experiences serving alongside leaders like General Paul Nakasone, former Commander of U.S. Cyber Command and Director of the NSA, and Marine Lieutenant General Vince Stewart, former Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

If you want to improve your leadership game, this book is well worth your time. And as a bonus, Scott does an outstanding job narrating the audiobook himself.
