Publisher's summary

From the author of the “compelling” (Star Tribune, Minneapolis) and critically acclaimed Everything You Want Me to Be, a riveting and suspenseful thriller about the mysterious disappearance of a boy and his stunning return 10 years later.

There is a place in Minnesota with hundreds of miles of glacial lakes and untouched forests called the Boundary Waters. Ten years ago a man and his son trekked into this wilderness and never returned.

Search teams found their campsite ravaged by what looked like a bear. They were presumed dead until a decade later...the son appeared. Discovered while ransacking an outfitter store, he was violent and uncommunicative and sent to a psychiatric facility. Maya Stark, the assistant language therapist, is charged with making a connection with their high-profile patient. No matter how she tries, however, he refuses to answer questions about his father or the last 10 years of his life.

But Maya, who was abandoned by her own mother, has secrets, too. And as she’s drawn closer to this enigmatic boy who is no longer a boy, she’ll risk everything to reunite him with his father, who has disappeared from the known world.

A distracting mispronunciation

For a story in which the Boundary Waters is a central focus, someone should have taught the reader how to pronounce the word "portage"

What will love do?

I enjoyed this book for what would be brutal honesty about how we as humans can react to issue's of childhood rejection, abandonment, trauma's through dysfunctional families. It deals with issue's of mental illness and how it affects people's life's. It had many twist's and unexpected turns in most every chapter. Glad I took a chance on reading it. But it may not be for everyone

Amazing story

This book is incredible. It’s heartbreaking at times. It causes all sorts of emotions. It isn’t “true to life” so if you hate books that cause you to say, “That wouldn’t work like that,” then you may not like this one. I loved it.

Mediocre Story

The story was just ok. The narrator was hard to listen to. I regret wasting a credit on it.

Meh

The reader talks too fast and the sentences run together. Several times I had to stop and go back to catch what she was saying. Story was just okay. wish I hadn't wasted a credit on it.

Cyclone

Being from Minnesota, it was very annoying the narrator could not pronounce “portage” correctly! Plus a few other words.

Disappointed

Very disappointing-sorry but narrator did not work with the story-there was a lot of slurring and mispronunciations—distracting
Wish I hadn’t wasted a credit-can’t even finish

Heart warming!

Great stoey. Makes me wonder about our future being predetermined or how fate seems to be inevitable.

Minnesotans don't use the French pronunciation of portage. I've lived in Minnesota all my life and this bugged me.

other than the mispronounciation of portage I liked it. a little bit of ick factor in one of the relationships.

Ridiculous

Finished it because I didn’t want to lose a credit… the story had such good possibilities… it could have been so much more…. Hated the ending… absolutely hated the ending…
The did not enjoy the narration…. Sounded like a whiny teenager.
Wish I had not lost a credit.
