Can't pick out the words

How the heck am I supposed to pick up phrases when all the spoken words in the phrases and sentences run together (and slow speed doesn't seem to help much)? The problem is that the individual words in these read French sentences tend to liaise into one another so that all the non-French ear will hear is a string of "run-on" French syllables without necessarily knowing what words in French to pack and parse these syllables into. I'm intermediate in the sense that I know 99% of the French words in these lessons and can spell and pronounce them, but I can't yet parse them out in spoken normal-speed French without a syllabus to look at. The spoken English translations don't help either because I still don't know which English word in the sentence translates which assembly of spoken French syllables. I don't know how to make this style of language teaching better except possibly to break down the spoken French words, and English translations, into 3- or 4-word packages until they are learned and then finally meld them together into longer phrases and sentences. Cut out the spelling (that's for beginners) and most of the "Repeat after me's," which tend to get tedious, and just make learnable packets to build upon.

the reader spells a lot in this book which slows the pace down a lot. the description says it is 'the ultimate step by step to learn french'. I think it should say 'it is the ultimate step into b o r e d o m'.

Beautiful

I love studying French. I’m a serious learner. The slow version of audio sounded ridiculous but I soon realized that it was very nice to have in case the faster version was a little too much. Just get it. You won’t regret.

Fentastic

This audiobook worked wonders at shaking the rust off my French; listening to the slowed-down versions of each short story were really helpful for me—I’ve always found French to be one of the most difficult languages to pick up, because of the fluidity of the words and musical phrasing. But listening to the slowed down version helped prepare me for listening to the normal speed version. Overall, I think no matter what your level of French, this audiobook is helpful.

Fantestic

I’m currently studying French at my university and planning on studying abroad in France this summer. I purchased this book to prepare for my trip and I am not disappointed! Many of the texts we in my French classes fail to convey a sense of multidimensionality with tenses. They usually focus on one tense, such as the passé composé, futur simple, etc. This book does a great job of integrating these tenses into the stories to provide a more comprehensive understanding of their usage. Plus, there are hundreds of new vocabulary words and phrases that I've learned. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to review verb conjugations, vocabulary, and phrases in a more comprehensive way. Bonne chance!

This book is a really good resource for people with intermediate French , writing, and speaking skills. I was looking to brush up on my high school-level French and this book was a great guide. The book's format (collection of short stories in text and audio) is conducive to learning - it really helped me understand basic grammar and vocabulary, and put them in context of common phrases, scenarios, etc. The short story format was especially helpful because it's a format I enjoy in English language,

Excellent

As a person with an intermediate-advanced level in French, this book served as the perfect reintroduction to French language and writing. The stories are well-written and easy to understand. The writer really considered the needs of those who are looking to learn and improve their French. Each story has a French-English vocabulary list that explains various words or phrases. At the end of the stories, s are also encouraged to practice their writing skills by writing a summary of what they've . There is even a sample provided!

Supareb

So, I studied French for 5 years through high school and my first year in university and than after moving abroad and visiting France I realized how little I was able to actually communicate. I needed a serious refresher but not just through the regular, fill-in-the-blank textbook way that I was so tired of - this book is that! The stories coupled with the audio is a great tool for practical language learning especially for those learning independently (obviously it would be even better in a class but it is well set-up so anyone could use it). The stories have a mix of structured writing + dialogue which is good to practice how normal people actually speak. My favorite part is the summary exercise at the end of each story. This really helps me grasp how much I am really understanding since the summaries are a bit simpler. The comprehensive vocabulary lists at the end of each story are also very convenient to review! Be aware though, this is for intermediate learners. While the author does a great job defining all the idioms and higher level terms you must have a basic working knowledge of French to use this. But for those who have studied before, this will definitely help take you to the next level. Would recommend!

I really enjoyed this ebook! It definitely renewed my interest of the French culture and language. I've taken a few years of French in high school and college, and I really wanted to review what I knew and challenge myself to learn what I didn't know. using this ebook to begin to understand the conversational, storytelling style of this book. There's also an audio version of the book, which would be great for anyone wanting to learn during their morning commutes!

Marvalous

During the past couple years in high school and college, I have sincerely struggled to connect with the lame stories written in all the books for my French classes. The best part about these books is you can tell that these stories are written to challenge your French vocabulary instead of trying to “baby” you and give you simple-minded, easy dialogue. I also very much appreciate that the story outlines the harder words and phrases as you r along. This way I don’t have to keep looking words up in the back of the book each time I don’t understand (which can get tiring). Also, there are writing assignments at the end of each story, so you can utilize the French you’ve just learned and help keep it to memory. This is an awesome book to help your fluency as well as a good review of verbs, nouns, and other vocabulary you already know.

OK for Canadian French

Did not realise it was narrated by a Canadian French speaker which made it made it quite challenging to understand and learn the pronunciation

For anyone trying to learn the French language I highly recommend this book. It gave many great examples while also explaining a lot about the French language and culture. I did take French when I was in school but can say I didn't retain much

A wonderful listen!!

Usually the biggest problem with learning languages from books instead of a class or CD is not knowing the pronunciation. This book does come with a link for mp3 downloads of the vocab and such

Nice One!!

I do not have a ton of experience with the French language. My husband speaks some so I have gained some knowledge through him regarding pronunciation. So in essence I am a very beginning learner

Valuable information!!

This book is a good choice for anyone who wants to learn a little bit of French, either as a refresher or to go on a trip equipped with some basics. I have learned some basic French before, in addition to Spanish and Italian, but even without that background I think this is a very easy to understand crash course in French.

Life changing Book!!

Nice kindle book to learn the basics of French. The supplemental audio is also helpful. My favorite aspect of the book is that it doesn't just include basic "tourist" communication, it also includes vocabulary on dining and entertainment (allergies and different ways to ask for the check) and relates pronunciation from other languages to French pronunciation
