Publisher's summary

A killer targets a peaceful lakeside community, and one family is changed forever by secrets and lies.

Evening Lake is idyllic, peaceful, with a close-knit community of families who have been coming to this western Massachusetts getaway for decades. Then newcomer Lacey Havnel and her daughter, Bea, move in. They are nothing like the well-heeled families who populate Evening Lake. Mysterious and rough around the edges, they keep to themselves.

Detective Harry Jordan sees his lake home as a respite from solving crimes on the streets of Boston. The Osborne family views their cottage as a way to avoid the distractions of life - especially for Wally Osborne, a famous horror writer who seems to need the peace and quiet more than anyone.

One night, Harry is walking alongside the lake when the night is rocked by an explosion: the Havnel house is engulfed in a conflagration, and young Bea is seen fleeing, hair on fire, and plunging into the lake. She survives, but her mother does not, and Harry is pulled into the investigation.

Unbeknownst to the rest of the community, Diz Osborne, the youngest Osborne son, carries a weighty secret about who else he saw rowing on the lake that night. When it's discovered that Lacey died not from the explosion but from a knife wound, it's soon clear that a murderer is on the loose. And this murderer is poised to strike again and again.

Told with Elizabeth Adler's inimitable style, illuminating descriptions, and intricate family dynamics, Last to Know is the definition of a pause-resister.

This is our first book from Audible and we really enjoyed it. The book was good, a good reader and story. We are looking forward to many more

Meh…

The story was interesting enough but the characters were weird and poorly written. I know the author is “Elizabeth Adler” but is this a pen name for a man? There are so many weirdly misogynistic tropes in this book. All of the female character are written like helpless and unlikable waifs. The men have savior complexes. One character actually victim blamed a murder victim. It’s super odd. I kept being throw out of the story due to super overtly misogynistic undertones.

Really enjoyed

Good story line. Love detective type books, waiting to see “who done it”! This one pretty much had me guessing till the end.

Kept my attention

I will give this one 4 stars because it kept me intrigued wanting to find out if I was right about the killer. I will say I second guessed myself multiple times and until the killer was revealed I still had a few options rolling around in my head, I was over thinking obviously! I wasn't sure if I was going to get through when I first heard the narration but finally decided the voice was perfect for the story. There were parts I felt were just thrown in and didn't make sense. I don't get why the last death in the book happened? Why not just say you were protecting a victim but oh well! The story was enough to keep my attention which is why I will stick with the 4 stars.

Couldn’t finish

This is personal preference I know - I didn’t care for the narrator - unsure if his accent is real or not but I found it very distracting. It was even worse when he attempted to imitate a woman’s voice. The female narrator was just as annoying - WTH is with the attempt at a seductive yet terrifying voice?! The story was filled with “filler” that had no relevance to the story (Mal and Harry) although it may have become relevant after I stopped listening, it just seemed to have no impact on the storyline up to my ending point at about half way.... will define not listen to a book read by this narrator again...

Too Predictable

The title and prologue were intriguing. However, the protagonist was clear from the very beginning. There were no surprises. I expected a major twist at the end, but there was none.
