Publisher's Summary

The eighth instalment in the biggest, funniest, most thrilling comedy-horror-adventure series in the universe - and the follow-up to 2012’s number-one best seller Kingdom of the Wicked

War has finally come. But it's not a war between good and evil, or light and dark - it's a war between Sanctuaries. For too long, the Irish Sanctuary has teetered on the brink of world-ending disaster, and the other Sanctuaries around the world have had enough. Allies turn to enemies, friends turn to foes, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie must team up with the rest of the Dead Men if they're going to have any chance at all of maintaining the balance of power and getting to the root of a vast conspiracy that has been years in the making.

But while this war is only beginning, another war rages within Valkyrie herself. Her own dark side, the insanely powerful being known as Darquesse, is on the verge of rising to the surface. And if Valkyrie slips, even for a moment, then Darquesse will burn the world and everyone in it.

Brilliant as usual

Being a great Skulduggery Pleasant fan, I am absolutely addicted to this series and I am agog with anticipation for each subsequent instalment. The "Last Stand of Dead Men" does not disappoint. With his usual ruthlessness, Derek Landy clearly does not appreciate too much attachment to any given character and the book is full of twists and turns. Can't wait for the next one!

Tense and Exciting

It has all the usual flares and jokes you would expect from Derek Landy. This book was very gripping and one of my all time favourites.

Absolutely brilliant

I loved it, another gripping, funny, hugely enjoyable volume. Probably the goriest so far, and great narration yet again(albeit with very Michael Caine English accents!) HUGE fan.

Breathtaking penultimate in this series

I had to download this as a talking book. Only one in the series not in the library. Hated having to listen instead of read. Reader spoke well, missed few words. Kudos to whoever found an Irish actor to read an Irish book. Well done. Loathed his attempt at women's voices and Ghastly's voice. Don't do it actors, just read. Intense Skulduggery's voice effective, and the Monster Hunters' voices and manner well captured. Thank heaven I can now go back to reading.

Bad voices for narrating

I quite liked this book but something to work on would be more distinguished and different voices. Overall it was Great! Better than having to read it yourself! The last thing is that the narrator needs to pronounce the names right. Such as Darquesse, which is pronounced and Darkese not Darkse. Overall, it was Great!

Still Missing Rupert Degas

As much as I enjoyed Hogan's narration and characterisation, there were a number of fairly obvious mistakes which were left uncorrected (e.g. mixing up the words "psychically" and "physically") and these took away from my enjoyment of the overall experience. However this is still one of my favourite narratives in one of my favourite series, and it was a lot of fun to listen to

One bad girl one good book

This is one good book the narrator is good but not as good as Rupert Degas. I wonder what the 10th book is going to be.
