Publisher's Summary

The death of Sylvia Kaye figured dramatically in Thursday afternoon's edition of the Oxford Mail.

By Friday evening, Inspector Morse had informed the nation that the police were looking for a dangerous man facing charges of wilful murder, sexual assault, and rape.

But as the obvious leads fade into twilight and darkness, Morse becomes more and more convinced that passion holds the key.

Critic Reviews

"[Morse is] the most prickly, conceited, and genuinely brilliant detective since Hercule Poirot." (The New York Times Book Review)
"[Dexter] is a magician with character, story construction, and the English language....Colin Dexter and Morse are treasures of the genre." (Mystery News)
"It is a delight to watch this brilliant, quirky man deduce." (Minneapolis Star & Tribune)

Why was it abridged?

What would have made Last Bus to Woodstock better?

Let the wonderful Kevin Whatley read the unabridged book! I was so excited to see that he was narrating the books on which the tv series he was such a great part of was based, but so much of the book was left out,t hat I couldn't finish it.

Has Last Bus to Woodstock turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes, if they are abridged

Which character – as performed by Kevin Whately – was your favorite?

Morse

What character would you cut from Last Bus to Woodstock?

none

Any additional comments?

Try again - don't abridge

Abridged version

Enjoy Whately, but I wish it was unabridged. These are great characters, especially Morse, so more would be better.

Abridged not so good

Can’t imagine what I missed with abridged version... not sure how many I will purchase of these in the future

This is an abbreviated version of the original

I Love Colin Dexter and all the Morse incarnations in television but this left me high and dry; it cut out all the various detail and eccentricities that make Morse unique.. I love Kevin Whately, and his interpretation of Morse is pure John Thaw, who played Morse in the iconic series. Sadly, this is a 'no.'

Rip Off

While the narrator was good and there were no technical problems, this was not a full rendition of the book. It was more like a report, that picked out the main details of the story without fully fleshing them out with the color and detail of the original publication. I should have known that an Audible audiobook for under $10 was too good to be true.

Warning: it’s abridged

Nowhere in the book details description does it say “abridged.“ How ridiculous is that? I paid a full credit for this book. I don’t want to return it because I want to find out the solution to the mystery. Quite a rip off.

You’ll love this if...

You are an Inspector Morse fan. And what could be better than having Inspector Lewis (Kevin Whately) be the narrator. It was great all around.

Good but a bit contrived

Great characters, well-written, but the author withheld information needed to accurately guess who did it until almost the end. An entertaining morality tale on the theme of “Thou shalt not Commit Adultery” and how little things like getting the wrong info on a bus schedule can have unforeseen deadly consequences.

Intrigue

Morse has most of the dialogue and Kevin Whately is Morse for sure. I would love Whately to play Morse in the middle age bracket on Masterpiece. He's Morse..

Similar to BBC production

I came to this book because of Inspector Morse, the BBC series. I found this harder to follow and a lot heavier on the dialogue. Good performance by the actor who plays DSI Lewis.

Terrible editing

Excellent story. Performance also fantastic. But editing is atrocious. The work is abridged, and sometimes it cuts out in full flow and begins a new scene.

Just don't!

This is useless. The chapters cut out midway through sentences so I've no idea how much of the book I even heard! Couldn't give a star rating to the story because I couldn't follow it either thanks to Mr Whateley's woefully flat and hurried reading style.
I returned this one!

Translates better on screen

Performance acted very well by Kevin Whately

Translates better to TV though as extra characters a bit confusing.
