Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." ( AudioFile magazine)

LoveChicago

I took Spanish 20 years ago and this is an amazing refresher. The repetition method works for me. This is pricy but worth it.

be ready

It comes at you hard and fast add if your mind isn't clear you're in for a tough time. Each day I would run through a lesson for or five times when I could find the time. The quality of learning was best when full attention was devoted to the complete 30 minute session.

Doesn't work for me

I guess I am more of a visual learner. I kept getting stuck on lesson 5, for a couple of weeks. I finally gave up out of frustration.

VERY Beginner Spanish

Any additional comments?

For someone who is just starting out this is the place to start. I know some Spanish so it was not helpful for me to start with this lesson. I would recommend this to those wanting to learn Spanish though.

Phase 1 for beginners only

Would you try another book from Pimsleur and/or the narrator?

yes

Any additional comments?

I should have none, but this is for beginner, beginners. If you aren't a beginner spanish speaker skip ahead to a different phase (not sure which one to suggest) but don't start with phase 1.

Good method, but not very practical vocab

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Not really anyone...

What could Pimsleur have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I like the method that Pimsleur uses to teach Spanish, but I am disappointed with the vocab that they choose to use. I bought this course to test it out even though I already speak a fair amount of Spanish. I both wanted to see how the Pimsleur method works so I could decide whether I wanted to buy one of their courses for a language that I am not familiar with and to decide whether the full course would be a good refresher for my Spanish skills.

I found that the course uses a lot of terms (vocabulary) that are not really very widely used. For example, the course tries to teach you the term "norteamericano" as the term that Spanish speakers use to refer to people from the United States. However, in all of my travels in Latin America and Spain, I've never heard this term. I was so curious that I asked native speakers in Mexico, Panama, and Colombia, and all of them said that the term is never used, and that "de los estados unidos" is the most frequently used term (in addition to the 'spanglish' "US").

This was not the only example of teaching vocab that's never used in everyday, practical speech. "Encantado" is only ever used when one person has a romantic interest in the other; the course would have you believe that it's the proper way to say "nice to meet you" (the most common way to say that is "mucho gusto." Again, people in three different Spanish speaking countries agreed with this. There are a few other examples of impractical vocab in this course, and that's only in the first 5 lessons.

In summary, I am hesitant to purchase this course for other languages if the Spanish version is teaching impractical vocab.

Great way to

What did you love best about Spanish Phase 1, Unit 01-05?

Lessons 01-05 were quite easy and I was able to remember everything I learned and apply it to the real world. I shared some of what I learned with a native speaker and I was told that my accent was almost perfect.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Spanish Phase 1, Unit 01-05?

My most memorable moment was when the words just rolled off my tongue when ask a question where I had to respond in Spanish.

What three words best describe the narrator’s performance?

Expeditious and succinct.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No.

I have to say wow.

If you could sum up Spanish Phase 1, Unit 01-05 in three words, what would they be?

After two days I can positively say this method really works for me.

What about the narrator’s performance did you like?

The methodical repetitions really help and you are making common conversations which help you to speak in sentences.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

I have always wanted to learn new language but could never decide which course to take as they all claim results. Not to mention cost as an issue. I downloaded audible last night and used the credit to purchase this product after looking at the reviews. I am extremely happy with my choice and I feel that I will be speaking Spanish in no time.I will be purchasing the rest of this series and then other languages as well. I highly recommend the Pimsleur method. This product actually performs as it claims I am very happy to say.

Pretty good way to learn Spanish

I took Spanish for several years in school (40+ years ago!!). This was a really good refresher and I will definitely get the next levels as well. Hopefully it does me well when we travel to Central America later this year.
