What is the Michel Thomas Method?

The Michel Thomas Method teaches everyday conversational language that will allow you to communicate in a wide variety of situations, empowered by the ability to create your own sentences and use the language instinctively, having absorbed the vocabulary and grammatical structures. These all audio courses were perfected over 25 years by gifted linguist and teacher Michel Thomas, and provide an accelerated method for language learning that is truly revolutionary.

Lessons 1 7, the Beginner course: This course makes no assumption of knowledge of any language other than English and gives the beginner practical and functional use of the spoken language. It is also appropriate for anyone who has studied French before, but has forgotten much of it or does not have confidence in speaking. The Beginner course is designed to take you from complete beginner to intermediate level.

Lessons 8 11, the Intermediate course: This course is for those with an intermediate level foundation in French, or those who have completed lessons 1 7 and want to take their learning to an advanced level and speak French proficiently and easily.

How does it work?

Unlike most language courses that focus around topics or grammar forms, the Michel Thomas Method works by breaking a language down into its component parts, enabling you to reconstruct the language yourself to form your own sentences, to say what you want, when you want. Within the first 10 minutes of the course, you will be generating complete sentences on your own. It is important that you complete the lessons in order. The Method is successful because it builds on the language you learn in each lesson and 'recycles' language taught in earlier lessons, allowing you to build ever more complicated sentences. Because the Method is based on understanding, not memorisation, there is no set limit to the length of time that you should study each lesson. Once you feel you have a good grasp of the language taught in one lesson, you can move on to the next.

In lesson 1 of the French Beginner course, you'll learn how to make simple statements and ask questions with…- similarities between French and English; words ending in ible and able: 'possible', 'probable', etc.- 'it is' and 'that is': 'that's life'; 'it is good'; 'it is very comfortable'- 'for' and 'with': 'for me'; 'with you'- 'not': 'it is not…'- 'like this, like that'; 'I'm sorry, but…'- words ending in ant, ent, ary, ance, ence, ion, ical: 'important', 'different', 'necessary', 'difference', 'importance', 'condition', 'practical', etc.- pronunciation and word stress- 'I would like (to)…'; 'will you…?/do you want (to)…?'- 'to speak'; 'to come'; 'to eat'; 'to go'; 'to know'; 'to do'; 'to give'; 'to spend (time/money)'; 'to dine'- question words: 'where?', 'how much?', 'what?', 'which?', 'what sort of?'- time expressions: 'this evening/tonight', 'at the present time'- 'thing', 'something', 'the same thing'- polite expression: 'please'- 'the'; 'a'- 'do you have…?'- 'of': 'what sort of…?'- 'in'; 'to'In the next lesson you'll learn about word order and pronunciation, and how to say what you must and can do.

Great learning tool

Amazing way to learn any language. Wish that you didn't have to buy each section/hour separately (which is why I give it one star off).

enjoying getting a sense of achievement

I took French lessons at school but it never seemed to make sense. After this first book I believe that I am speaking better French than after 3 years at school

Excellent method -

As an American, I appreciate this approach, as it is friendly and focuses on conversational French from the very beginning. I really enjoy Michel's "fond uncle" voice.

[The main complaint I read on Amazon while comparing French language software in regards to this set is that the female voices are annoying - ABOUT THAT: I think it may have been a mistake to market to American audiences a "classroom" in which the male student always makes intuitive leaps and immediately gets things correct but the female student is dense as a steel hammer and must be constantly corrected. But, that said, at least the teacher is sweet-natured and patient? A lot of reviews talk about how "annoying" the female student is - but I was more annoyed that that is how the lessons were purposefully set up - the reason she's annoying (and she does become so, quickly) is because she is written as very slow and forgetful. Bear in mind that, from the outset, students are told NOT to try to remember things - so forgetful should be no problem - but there is a slight impatience nonetheless when she uses the wrong word, etc. Then they are admonished for trying to remember - I find this a little condescending... but, um, in a funny way. ;) If it were two female students or two male students, one slower to catch on and one quick and intuitive, I think that "annoyance" could have been avoided altogether. THAT SAID: I had not remotely the negative reactions to that aspect that some of the reviewers on Amazon had - those reviews just made me curious, so I was paying attention and that is my take on that complaint many have made. I don't mind the female student overall, because her slower learning means that quicker students can practice the phrase while she works it out. I think THAT was probably the purpose, in actuality, of a slower student and a faster student - people can learn at the pace that works for them and this setup gives them time to do so. Everyone learns at their pace, and with foreign languages, sometimes how you hear and pronounce things is a huge barrier.]

My personal opinion is that the Michel Thomas methods are WAY more useful than Rosetta Stone, etc - because they are immediately conversational and more importantly, they focus on the student intuitively forming conversations through a steadily progressive set of conversational phrases and prompts. I took 4 years of French in high school and college, and have travelled abroad - conversational language learning most closely represents language immersion. When I was in Tahiti, a lot of French is still spoken there as well as a patois which includes French and my years of French came in quite handy, but I was missing so much of the conversational links after years of not using my school French, (which focused on nouns, verbs, spelling, pronunciation, "common" phrases, etc) and only in my later French courses did we converse. When we went to France, I could read menus & signs, have halting communications, but I was frustrated, even further removed from my school French at that point. I love the French language! I am hoping so spend quite a lot of time in France in the coming years, but I needed a tutor to bring me up to speed in French conversation and I think, after comparing so many, the Michel Thomas method is the one for me. Merci. :)

Great choice.

Not as easy as it's described, but still very good. so much is covered in lesson one that you could probably re-listen a hundred times and have more to master. well worth a go.
