Critic Reviews

"Pimsleur programs provide plenty of positive reinforcement that will keep learners on track, and we found that Pimsleur gave us more proficiency and confidence in speaking the new language than any of the other language programs we reviewed." (AudioFile magazine)

Excellent way to learn conversational French

I did French GCSE a very long time ago and have brushed up on it from time to time over the years, so started with lessons 26 to 30 instead of at the beginning. This course is absolutely fabulous for pronunciation whereas my O-level course was more about reading and writing. The thing that really works well is the challenge to come out with conversation phrases and sentences yourself. Initially you are given the phrases you need and each new word is introduced with a clear and slow pronunciation to make sure you can hear it properly and repeat it. Subsequently you are asked to recall the new phrases interspersed with old phrases. It becomes a challenge to jump back and forth between them and in the process the new phrases get etched into your brain.

I found that whilst I already knew a lot of the words from my French GCSE course, a lot of the conversational phrases were completely new to me, and are the sort of thing that would be really useful to know. Many of which are said very differently in French and English. For example saying "I managed to do something" in French is "I arrived at doing something". I also managed to correct my pronunciation on quite a few words. I am now more confident about when to use those little words like "a" and "en".

You won't learn masses of new vocabulary with this course, so recommend doing another course with it for the vocabulary. The really good thing for me is being able to listen whilst I am doing other things like mindless house hold chores, so it does not take up any extra time in my day.

The course notes say to do each lesson only once, however I do each lesson 3 times on 3 consecutive days before moving on. That way I feel like it has really sunk in. I am now on level 3, so you can see I am a big fan. Totally recommend this course.
