Publisher's Summary

The eagerly awaited second book of the critically acclaimed trilogy!

Orphan Rossamünd Bookchild has been sworn into the Emperor's service - his duty is to light the lamps along the Emperor's highways and protect travelers from the ferocious bogles that live in the wild. But he's found it no easier to fit in with the lamplighters than he did with the foundlings - always too small and too meek - and his loneliness continues no matter how hard he tries to succeed.

But when a haughty young girl, a member of a suspiciously regarded society of all-women teratologists - monster hunters - is forced upon the lamplighters for training, Rossamünd is no longer the most despised soul around. As Rossamünd begins to make new friends in the dangerous world of the Half-Continent, he also seems to make more enemies, finding himself pushed toward a destiny that he could never have imagined.

There aren't enough stars for this trilogy

DM Cornish has created a world so immersive and detailed that all you want is more. He has created his own slang and introduces it throughout each of the three books so expertly. To top of the BRILLIANCE of his story, Humphrey Bower truly gives us one of the most stellar performances that I have ever heard. You will fall in love with Rossamund and all of the other characters that DM Cornish and Humphrey Bower make come alive.

Who is Rossamund

And what will he discover about himself and his world? New friends, a wit, a lantern maker, and a doctor guide out hero through the maze of contradictions which seem to appear at the worst possible times. Happy reading!

Amazing story creation

This is my fourth reading. Three with audible. Best written and told story I have read in a while. I hope there will soon be another trilogy to follow.

Exquisite fiction

This is truly some of the best writing I've read in a goodly long time. Such exquisite word choice, such creative word smithery, such great story telling! It's not just for young readers. It's just plain good reading for any age!

Need to read the next book

This book may be written for a younger audience, I have found it totally entertaining. I feel like I know the characters just like I do my own family. I have a genuine interest in what might happen to them in the next book. First class narration, beautifully done thank you.
