I love the adventures of Walter, his friends, and C.R.A.P. The setting in Kansas City is perfect for the story. The listener gets to hear about real estate being snatched up by unscrupulous persons. There are lots of twists and turns and a few surprises. I think my favorite part was the Thanksgiving dinner preparation. I laughed so hard after having finished my own Thanksgiving dinner.The undercover assignments were the best thing since sliced bread!

I look forward to the next book in this series!!!!


The narration was well done.The characters were well portrayed.George Kuch adds great enthusiasm to the story.

Again new favorite series. Being an elvis fan I was happy with this story one hundred percent

stellar effort

Being of an age, (late 50s) it is heartening to see the possibility of continued usefulness if only in fiction. I can identify with the protagonist both in experience and in the vicissitudes of age. I look forward to the continued adventures of Walt and am grateful to Robert Thornhill for the ride. George Kuch is an able narrator and I intend to avail my self of his other audible efforts. I can't get enough of this series! It's terrific! I love Walt Williams and his merry band of C.R.A.P.ers. The narrator, George Kuch, does an amazing job bringing the author's words to life! I'm sad that they've only got three of the books in audio (so far). Keep up the wonderful work!!

Even better than book one

Loved this book. The metaphors to candy bars, Elvis songs, I am an Elvis fan, and the Thanksgiving scene is too funny. Well done, Robert. These characters crack me up.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lady Justice and the Lost Tapes?

I'm in my mid 60's and enjoy the Lady Justice series. I have over a dozen Kindle book editions. Lost Tapes is the second Audible editions that I've had the pleasure to listen to.Walt is involved with Life, I live vicariously through his adventures. Villians, love interest, some friends both eccentric and down to earth.

Have you listened to any of George Kuch’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, he is perfect for this series, and I've enjoyed everything he has done that I've listened to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Had to be Thanksgiving meal. Sans the chitlins. Lol.

Groan-worthy jokes & dead bodies!

Note: While this is Book 2 in the series, it works perfectly fine as a stand alone novel.

Walt Williams was a retired senior real estate agent but he felt he still had more in him. So he joined the Kansas City police force as part of their senior citizens outreach program. Now he and his partner, Ox, traipse around the more colorful sections of town in this tale. The mafia wants certain real estate freed up and use nearly every dirty trick there is to get people to sell. Meanwhile, one of Walt’s friends uncovered a lost rock and roll treasure that needs to be kept under tight wraps for now.

This was a fun light-hearted murder mystery. There’s lots of corny jokes and the plot is pretty straight forward. The characters are lovable in a good-will-always-win-out sort of way. I really liked how this book had so many seniors in it. Some still work. Some are retired. Several do volunteer duties. Walt’s girlfriend, Maggie, is still working as a realtor and that gives Walt a bit of an advantage as he looks into the unusual circumstances of some recent sales.

Throughout this book, Walt plays dress up, going undercover more than once. The locations of interest to Walt and the police department include some lively bars that cater to the LGBTQ community. While there are plenty of jokes from both Walt and his fellow officers, they felt rather dated, like something an older uncle would say and the next generation would be slightly embarrassed for him.

Speaking of the humor, there’s plenty of it in this book. Everything from a whoopee cushion to a stand-up comedian to one-line zingers to ribbing from fellow officers. Some of it was well timed and funny. Some of it was rather worn and just got a groan from me. Sometimes I felt like the author had a big book of jokes sitting beside him as he worked on this book and he felt obliged to put in at least 3 jokes per chapter.

I did enjoy the main plot concerning the mafia moving in and forcing owners to sell their houses or businesses cheap. The story did a good job of showing the various ways the mafia went about getting their way. They did everything from polite requests to buy outright to dirty trickery to intimidation to torching a place. At first Walt is the only officer that is interested in checking this out but as things escalate, the force in general becomes committed to putting an end to it.

The minor plot line, that dealing with the lost tapes of a rock and roll idol, didn’t really appeal to me. I just wasn’t into the R&R idol and therefore, this chunk of the book didn’t grab me. When the main plot line wrapped up, I still had about 1.5 hours of book to listen to! Well, that was mostly this second minor plot line and a big holiday celebration. They were cute but not nearly as interesting as the mafia.

All in all, it was a fun, quaint little mystery. If you’re looking for something light and, perhaps, a bit predictable, then this would be a good book to check out. For me, it was so-so.

The Narration: George Kuch did a good job. He had an unexpected range of voices and even did a decent job with the female voices. His voice really fits well with the variety of seniors. There were a few times where I heard a few mouth noises but they didn’t distract from the narration.

Being a senior citizen comes work a lot of drawbacks. But when you work for the police, life becomes totally surreal. Places are being burned down, many people are being injured or winding up dead. An ex realtor just doesn't stand a chance to be taken seriously when he needs to play act as a gay man or even a transvestite. It doesn't help that his love things it's hilarious. But things are coming to a head in finding the reason and person responsible.
George Kuch is a fantastic narrator whose voice draws you in and keeps you enthralled.

Humor, real life situations, holidays, multiple mysteries to solve, danger, and a small amount of romance add up to to a comical yet serious story that makes for an enjoyable and entertaining audiobook. I love the characters, older but spunky and vivacious! The narrator did an awesome job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Better than the first book!

Walt Williams returns in Lady Justice and the Lost Tapes by Robert Thornhill, just in time to take down a mob boss and other criminals too. In this delightful comedy/mystery, Walt continues in his job as the leader of C.R.A.P. (City Retiree Area Patrol), in which retired citizens become special members of the police force. The mob clearly is involved in trying to buy out an entire neighborhood, using strong-arm tactics including simple pressure, vandalism, arson, and even murder. Walt and his fellow “Crapper,” Vince, have to go undercover posing as a couple to the gay bar in the vicinity. But they still can’t figure out exactly what is going on. So the investigation leads to Walt’s having to go undercover in a tranny bar! And in another fun move, Walt serves as ” Grandpa Elvis,” the King’s impersonator.

This book has a great mystery plot to it, or rather multiple plots, but beyond that, it is a delightful story with loads of fun. This is the kind of book that Garrison Keiller would write if he were to write a mystery. The book takes side trips to look at scenes from Walt’s life and time with his quirky, motley set of friends, and then it veers back on course with the mystery once again. The storytelling is so creative that even though I personally find Keiller a bit tiresome, I never lose delight in any of this hilarious book.

For an example of the fun storytelling, the book presents a really fun Thanksgiving. Walt and Maggie cook the turkey, with neither having any cooking skills at all. For stuffing, they start with Wonder Bread, not having any stuffing bread. Then, figuring that the lettuce he has is also a vegetable, he sautes that with the onion. The instructions say to add stock, which he learns is a kind of soup. With a choice of beef barley and chicken noodle, they figure that since chicken is poultry that’s the more appropriate choice. Then they season it with crab seasoning, the only seasoning they have. When it comes time to cook the gravy, Walt doesn’t have any flour, but shouldn’t pancake mix work? Since most of the other guests bring pumpkin pie, with everything else being inedible, everyone enjoys just turkey and pie but agrees that it’s the best Thanksgiving they’ve ever experienced.

The book is excellently narrated by George Kuch, who embodies Walt and even rather sounds like Garrison Keiller in addition, voice and slow pace and all. He really contributes so much to the book as he performs that I think he deserves high accolades for his job. Although the quality of the book already kept me from putting the recording on pause even for a second, the performance is so excellent that it added to my being glued to the book all the more.

I want to advise anyone and everyone to read Lady Justice and the Lost Tapes if you can’t listen to it, but definitely do not skip this series! I did not think it possible, but this book is even better than the first book in the series, Lady Justice Takes a C.R.A.P.. I give this book five stars!
