Publisher's summary

Nine years ago, things were perfect. Lacey and Karson had found their happily ever after in each other... or so they thought. How do two people who were meant to be move on from that once-in-a-lifetime love?

Lacey has a strength inside her that comes alive with the things she's most passionate about. She's a fighter and a survivor, and she has everything she's ever wanted except the one thing that matters most - love.

Karson is doing the one thing he loves most - playing hockey for the Assassins - yet he knows regret. He knows his life has been missing the one thing he walked away from so many years ago: Lacey.

Nine years later, and neither has been able to succeed in moving on from what was, what could have been, and who each of their hearts still beats for. When a chance encounter during a fateful night has their paths crossing again, will the tether still attaching their souls allow them to face the past, present, and a possible future?

Contains mature themes.

Karson and Lacey

I loved the book and I love the audio. Lucy Malone does a great job in bringing this book to life. I wish there were more guys like Karson. It took a while, but I'm glad Lacey finally got the courage to live without the ones who were trying to run her life. Great read and a great listen!

More than 5 stars!!!!

OMG! This book will hands down have you in all your feels. When Karson was first introduced in Breaking Away I could feel his pain in the words he shared with Philip and couldn’t wait to listen to his story and luckily enough it was the next book. So much love in these pages that it just pours right out! Get ready bc you are definitely going to be SWOON!❤️

A second chance, despite the odds (& family).

The prequel novella to Lacey and Karson's story, Tangled in the Laces, is included at the beginning of the Audible version of this book. That being said, it is not necessary to have read that in order to understand and enjoy this book. It definitely adds to it, though.

Lacey and Karson originally met in college, soon after Lacey's battle with breast cancer. This story occurs nine years later when the two have a clandestine meeting in a Chicago cab that kick-starts their relationship once again. Their relationship once again moves incredibly quickly and the two promise each other forever for the second time (this time legally). The main problem is that Lacey's family still despises Karson. When certain details come to light, Lacey's brother and Karson's former best friend Grady is able to accept their relationship in the name of seeing Lacey truly happy for the first time in nine years. Grady's wife and Lacey's best friend Rachel, however, is not as accepting and thinks their relationship is a huge mistake. It is Lacey's father Nate, though, who is hell-bent on breaking the two apart for a second time. While Lacey desperately wants to believe her father, the only parent she has left, is coming around to Karson and wants to see her happy (to the point of believing him over her husband), she is eventually forced to see the awful truth about the way her father has been running her life ever since her mother died, and in ways she never could've even fathomed. Karson's family, on the other hand, falls instantly in love with Lacey and accepts her as part of the family. And Karson's family protects their own (emotionally and physically), leaving them with a distaste for the Martins.

While Lacey and Karson have some serious hurdles over the course of the book, they do find their HEA. The book ends with no cliffhanger and can be read as a stand-alone if desired. I would highly recommend reading the rest of the series, though.

Loved and hated it!

I loved Larson! He is the perfect man but I got so annoyed with lacey and absolutely hated her family. I was seriously wishing I could confront her dad and Rachel and beat them both up.

Loved

Loved the love story. Lacey did make me mad because it took her so long to truly believe in the love of her husband.

Moving, emotional story!

This audiobook in the Nashville Assassins series was full of emotion and angst. The hero Karson and the heroine Lacey met in college and fell so deeply in love they knew they were meant to be together forever. Karson played hockey during college and Lacey’s father was his coach. He was in line to be first draft and they were excited. Lacey is a breast cancer survivor and her mother died from breast cancer. When it was time for the draft, Lacey’s father called Karson into his office and forces him to break up with her by holding his career over his head.
Then we go nine years into the future and they meet accidentally in Chicago, where she lives and he’s there to play a hockey game. It’s like they’ve never been apart. What they didn’t anticipate is how manipulative Lacey’s father would get, how underhanded he would become in trying to keep them apart. I really hated her dad in this story!
Can they see forever when they have so many obstacles and problems thrown at them. I loved Karson so much, while Lacey was really an insecure person. Narration was very well done. Probably my favorite in this series so far.

Karson is a saint!

I have never wanted to wrap my hands around a characters throat in a book like I want to do with Lacey. She continually throws herself pity parties. She is full of insecurites and always second guesses herself. Then there is her family and best friend. Don't get me started on them! However, sometimes I could honestly relate to what was going on in her mind. She is dang lucky to have someone like Karson to have her back. Karson is so patient he deserves a medal. With the help of her brother (who redeems himself) Lacey realizes what she is doing before it's too late. Good story with a bit of an emotional overload.
