Mijaíl Bulgákov (1891-1940)
Mijaíl Afanásievich Bulgákov nació el 15 de mayo de 1891 en Kiev, Ucrania, que entonces formaba parte del Imperio Ruso. Hijo de Afanasiy Bulgákov, un profesor de la Academia de Teología de Kiev. Sus abuelos fueron ambos clérigos de la Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa. Bulgákov asistió a la Primera Escuela Secundaria de Kiev.
En 1913 Bulgákov contrajo matrimonio con Tatiana Lappa. Al estallido de la Primera Guerra Mundial se ofreció como voluntario en la Cruz Roja, y fue enviado de inmediato al frente de guerra, donde fue herido de gravedad al menos en dos ocasiones. En 1916 se graduó en Medicina en la Universidad de Kiev.
Luego de la Guerra Civil y el alza al poder de los sóviets, gran parte de su familia emigró en el exilio a París. Mientras, Mijaíl y sus hermanos se encontraban en el Cáucaso, donde él comenzó a trabajar como periodista y también ejerció de médico rural. En 1921, Bulgákov se mudó a Moscú donde comenzó su carrera como escritor. En 1925 se divorciaría de su primera esposa, para contraer matrimonio con Lyubov Beloziórskaya. Publicó una serie de escritos durante la primera mitad de los años 20, pero desde 1927 su carrera comenzó a sufrir debido a la constante crítica de que era demasiado anti-soviético. Para 1929 su carrera estaba arruinada, y el gobierno había censurado y prohibido la publicación de cualquiera de sus trabajos y la puesta en escena de cualquier de sus obras.
La mayor parte de sus escritos permaneció en los cajones de su escritorio durante varias décadas. En 1930 escribió una carta a Stalin solicitando permiso para emigrar de la Unión Soviética si es que ésta se negaba a valorarlo como escritor. Como respuesta recibió una llamada personal del propio Stalin, pidiéndole explicaciones acerca de su petición. El escritor no se atrevió a reiterar su petición.
En 1932, Bulgákov se desposó por tercera vez, con Yelena Shílovskaya, quién sería la inspiración del personaje Margarita en su novela más famosa:” El maestro y Margarita”.
Bulgákov murió en Moscú el 10 de marzo de 1940 a causa de una insuficiencia renal. Tenía 48 años.
A causa de las autoridades políticas, los últimos 10 años de su vida vivió condenado al silencio y al olvido; parecía que su nombre se hubiera borrado de la literatura. Hoy, Bulgákov se encuentra en un nivel parecido al de Turguéniev, Tolstói o Chéjov.
