Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811)
Miembro de una familia prusiana, noble pero sin fortuna o propiedades, Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist nació el 18 de octubre de 1777 en Francfort de Oder, donde su padre era capitán de la guarnición militar asentada en la ciudad. La muerte del padre en 1788, dejando esposa y siete hijos (dos mujeres del primer matrimonio, y cuatro varones y una mujer del segundo) deja a la familia en una apremiante situación económica, acentuada por la negativa del rey Federico Guillermo II a reconocer el testamento del capitán y, por lo tanto, a dejar sin la pensión que correspondía a la viuda y los hijos.
Esta situación lleva a la familia a enrolar a Heinrich en el ejército antes de cumplir los 15 años.

Deciden matarse, uno por creer que ya no le quedan salidas, la otra para evitar el dolor. Se preparan. Escriben cartas despidiéndose y diciendo sus últimas voluntades. El 20 de noviembre de 1811 pasan la noche en una posada de Potsdam, a la mañana siguiente pasean alegres y despreocupados por las orillas del lago Wannsee, en las cercanías de Potsdam, a las afueras de Berlín. A las cuatro de la tarde se escucharon dos disparos. Kleist había disparado contra Henriette y luego contra sí mismo. Kleist tenía 34 años.
En la noche, el esposo de Henriette se presentó a recoger el cuerpo; lo mismo hizo un amigo de Kleist, el consejero de guerra Peguilhen.
El suicidio le convirtió de inmediato en uno de los más significativos mitos románticos.
