Betty Friedan : Fille d'immigrés russes juifs, Betty Goldstein Friedan est née en 1921 dans l'Illinois. Diplômée du Smith College, elle met en veille sa carrière de journaliste pour épouser un producteur de théâtre, Carl Friedan, et élever leurs trois enfants, avant de divorcer en 1969. Marquée par les récits de ses anciennes camarades d'université lors de leurs réunions, elle s'étonne du malaise des femmes au foyer dans l'Amérique prospère d'après-guerre. De ces entretiens ainsi que de ses nombreuses recherches naît La Femme mystifiée en 1963, un best-seller immédiat toujours vendu et étudié aux États-Unis et fréquemment cité dans la pop culture. Dès lors, Betty Friedan s'impose comme l'égérie de la deuxième vague féministe. Elle crée l'association NOW, National Organization for Women, qui joue un rôle primordial sur la scène politique et culturelle des années 1960-1970. Tout au long de son parcours, Betty Friedan a prôné un féminisme modéré, visant une plus grande égalité des sexes (notamment sur le plan salarial) et des droits accrus pour les femmes tels que le droit à l'avortement, tout en déplorant "les dérives qui conduisent à une hostilité aux hommes". Betty Friedan, une figure de proue du féminisme moderne et une infatigable militante présente à toutes les grandes conférences sur les droits des femmes, s'est éteinte en 2006.
Yvette Roudy : Yvette Roudy, née le 10 avril 1929 en Gironde, dans un milieu ouvrier, se marie en 1951. Elle entre très jeune dans la vie active puis fait un séjour à Glasgow de 1951 à 1954. Ces trois années écossaises lui permettent, entre autres, de perfectionner son anglais.
