Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

She was known to the world as Emily Doe when she stunned millions with a letter. Brock Turner had been sentenced to just six months in county jail after he was found sexually assaulting her on Stanford's campus. Her victim impact statement was posted on Buzzfeed, where it instantly went viral - viewed by 11 million people within four days, it was translated globally and read on the floor of Congress; it inspired changes in California law and the recall of the judge in the case. Thousands wrote to say that she had given them the courage to share their own experiences of assault for the first time.

Now she reclaims her identity to tell her story of trauma, transcendence, and the power of words. It was the perfect case, in many ways - there were eyewitnesses, Turner ran away, physical evidence was immediately secured. But her struggles with isolation and shame during the aftermath and the trial reveal the oppression victims face in even the best-case scenarios. Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life.

Know My Name will forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing. It also introduces listeners to an extraordinary writer, one whose words have already changed our world. Entwining pain, resilience, and humour, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.

“If you are worried about your reputation, my suggestion is, don’t rape anyone”

I won’t tell you it’s not painful, but I managed to finish it. Typically, blatant injustice is too galling to read to the end and stops me mid book.
She took us behind the curtain and opened our eyes. A necessary and powerful book, a must read, though it may be difficult. We need to be taught consent, and if this book made you question your understanding of consent and the contours of victim-blaming then it succeeds.

It is heart breaking.

Definitely raises awareness of what victims of sexual assault have to go through, and how unfair the media can be to them as well.

A rollercoaster of a memoir

I am a journalist who followed Chanel's courtroom journey from start to finish and this was like reliving it but with heart and soul replacing the cold and misogynistic courtroom. I cried. I laughed. I stopped listening to write things down to remember always. Chanel's writing is beautiful and raw.

Compelling & Unapologetic

A fascinating step by step account of the true story of Chanel Miller. What the media didn't want to say, what the defence tried to hide, what the judge ignored, what Emily Doe didn't manage to shout out.
I listened, mortified, for over 15 hrs about what it's like to be a rape victim. Chanel is a force we need to use; she is all of us. What a gift to society this book is.

Beautiful, inspiring and eloquent

I am feeling such deep gratitude that the author wrote this beautiful memoir - certainly not an easy story to tell - it connected me to my own past and made me want to write down my own story just to help me come to terms with it. In the book, she expresses herself so eloquently and I have such admiration for her and her family for their ability to turn such a painful experience into such a powerful book. Thank you, Chanel!

Chanel’s story is both moving and challenging. She really made me think about my own perceptions of the world and how people perceive survivors and women overall. Thank you Chanel.

Raw, Real, Powerful. Read this.

This is a compelling account of what it was like for Chanel Miller to go through an experience many people can't imagine, yet for too many women has become part of their life. The narrative exposes not only the brutal shock and pain of being sexually assaulted, but the almost insurmountable trauma and gruelling struggle of being chewed up and spat out by the justice system as a result.

It's an incredible journey that inspires compassion and rage in equal intensity, and ever since listening to it I cannot get over the stark and undeniable truth of the hypocrisy and contradiction faced by victims of this type of crime:

Women who are always vigilant / suspicious of men are called paranoid. Women who call out misogynistic or rape-apologist behaviour are shut down, and told NOT ALL MEN. Women who carry their keys in their fists or turn down drinks are hysterical, they should relax.

But the minute a woman is assaulted, the focus is on her actions, as though she invited the crime. What did you drink? Why? How much? What were you wearing? Why were you so careless? What did you expect?

I can't get the issue out of my head. This book is powerful and thought-provoking and I cannot recommend it enough. Her bravery, her voice, and her struggle deserve to be heard by everyone.

Raw, real, beautifully expressed

Chanel’s captures her journey since that night her whole world was violently thrown upside down just beautifully - I felt every word - even though it’s 34 years since I was molested as an 8 year-old. What is striking is how the same emotions are felt by victims regardless of whether the abuse is physical, sexual, verbal, emotional in nature. Abuse is abuse - full stop. Chanel, thank you for being so brave to share your story and helping millions! 💗💪🏽🌸

Eloquent and searing. Unputdownable

I read Chanel Millers book as a survivor of serious sexual trauma that took it’s toll on my life over many years as it went through the criminal justice process and then appeal. The immense power Chanel is able to convey in her writing is a true gift and I feel like that 16 year old girl who was able to swing her legs out of bed for the first time, after 2 years. She has given survivors a voice and a story they can use as an anchor point to learn to be themselves again, and recover. She is a great advocate for survivors and I recommend this book to everybody. Thank you Chanel.

Extraordinary

This book is extraordinary. Chanel Miller is the author of the Emily Doe letter about being sexually assaulted in Stanford university which was published by Buzzfeed. Not only is this a must read about rape culture and the justice system in the US but this is also a beautifully-written book about race, love, family, identity, community and bravery. The sense of strength and hope you feel after reading this book is a testament to Chanel Miller’s talent. Listening to her reading the audiobook was a real privilege.

A Book I Won't Forget

Chanel Miller experienced what is, every woman's worst nightmare. This is a book I'd urge everyone to read, as its contents are both important & empowering. However, I did sometimes find the writing & narrative styles, a little arduous at times. Definitely a book I won't forget in a hurry, for all the right reasons.

Great content, terrible narration

A vital, timely account of a terrible experience. However, the decision to allow the author to narrate her own story is a badly misjudged one. She speaks with the dead-eyed passion of a flounder, rarely conveying emotion in any meaningful way. This is why professionals should read audiobooks instead of authors.

Powerfully Written

I found that the way Chanel Miller carefully and patiently takes the listener through the pain and the injustices of her treatment from the initial assault, through the trial, to the further injustices of the sentencing and the aftermath was compelling and powerful. Her narrative style and her choice of language was excellent. At times it almost seemed like a novel but her use of examples and analogies to illustrate her points and the power of her writing left me in no doubt about her sincerity and the extent of the damage she suffered.

I am grateful to Chanel for having given me an opportunity to hear her story in detail, in a way which is hardly ever heard in the news media, precisely for the reasons that she outlines in her narrative.

I can safely say that, as a man, it has given me a lot to think about - particularly when evaluating the stories of others who find themselves as victims of sexual assault.

Brilliant

This book should be read in every class and discussed in every home. If we are to make this world a better place for our daughters, we need to understand what Chanel is talking about.
Most of all this book is for us men. Most of us are decent, very few of us are rapists but we all contribute to the patriarchy that allows injustice to be maintained.

Must listen

This story is powerful, emotional, brave and honest. I would recommend to all.
I did I find the narrating a little slow at first, but I upped the speed x1.25 and it took nothing away from the impact of the story, didn’t feel rushed, and brought it to a nice pace for me.

Being a similar age to Chanel, this story really hit home. Such an amazing woman and very good at expressing her pain and suffering as well as being able to acknowledge her own strength.
For sure worth a read/listen.

Inspiring, chellenging social norms

I really loved Chanels it was on my reading list for a book club I am part of so I had little idia of what was abiut to come.

Chanels Story and the way she takes you on a journey is amazing. Inspiring and comfronting. Several time thought out the book I had years in my eyes.

How brave she is, her, love for her sister. Inspiring to reach out and use you voice. It challenged how I thought about rape, how I thought about the justice system and once again reminded me of the importance of consent.

There is very more that I would like to say but I struggle finding the words.

Thank you chanel. You make the world a little better and safer for everyone.
