Publisher's Summary

Let me tell you all I know for sure. My name: Shauna. I woke up in a hospital bed missing six months of my memory. In the room was my loving boyfriend - how could I have forgotten him? - my estranged father and my abusive stepmother. Everyone blames me for the tragic car accident that left me near death and my dear brother brain damaged. But what they say can't be true - can it?

I believe the medicine is doing strange things to my memory. I'm unsure who I can trust and who I should run from. And I'm starting to remember things I've never known. Things not about me. I think I'm going crazy. And even worse, I think they want to kill me.

loved it

This book is unlike Ted's other books bc it doesn't really focus on Christ love but it does talk about love. God's love and about a person's need for love in general. Ted Dekker is the best author and his need to share our savior's love for everyone of us is told in his stories.

a pleasant surprise

I did not like the whining main character. I set the book aside for over 2 months. I came back to it started all over again. I ended up absolutely loving the book!

narration

the story was all right, however the narration isn't that great. it's was hard to get into the story. the narrator voice and proformace reminded me of sitting through a middle school play.

EXCELLENT BOOK, NARRATION NEARLY PAINFUL

I ENJOYED THE BOOK IMMENSELY, THOUGH I FELT THE NARRATOR'S "VOICES" FOR THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS A BIT ABSURD. AFTER I ADJUSTED TO THAT, I FELL IN SYNC WITH THE STORY ITSELF. WELL WORTH THE CREDIT. TED DEKKER NEVER DISAPPOINTS. GIVEN A DIFFERENT NARRATOR, I WOULD HAVE CONSIDERED THE BOOK TO BE A 4 OR 5 STAR READ.

Overall, Glad I Stuck it Out

So, not far into this book I stopped to read more reviews because it was a painful start for me...I think I kinda get Ted Dekker though...he is willing to annoy you to get his point across...the point which while mentioned early, I didn't grasp the depth of it until the very end. Don't give up for you that are Dekker fans...I admit I almost did, but I'm glad I didn't. Dekker doesn't usually just want to tell a story, he wants to teach a lesson. He will sacrifice a little with the story to do that. I have to remember this...its not the story, it's the message I'm waiting for... I would love to talk to someone who gave this book less than 4 stars and explain the layers of complexity...in a nutshell, this book is not a simple read with a simple story line...it is for those who enjoy and appreciate depth and self reflection.

SPOILER

The main character seemed to have a really annoying personality. She seems almost unable to grasp reality...but Dekker uses this exaggerated personality to show that people all around us and some of us ourself can be just as stupid in our thinking...as much as we wouldn't want to admit it...(sorry used stupid but other than obtuse I don't know how else to describe this type of thinking...) I have just as annoyed with myself as I was with Shauna...

Think of Samson...how dumb could he be? But he did keep laying his head in her lap even when she had shown there was nothing trustworthy about her. How many people do the same thing thinking they are stronger or smarter...than whatever is going to defeat them? And they generally are defeated because that arrogance makes them do equally stupid things...

So Dekker weaved this story showing that if we can choose perspective we can have happiness in spite of reality and trying to erase or ignore it just causes additional pain...If you don't believe it study Bible history...People throughout time have used drugs and alcohol and relationships, long hours at work...anything to forget...maybe we should spend more time changing perspectives, turning to God...and being thankful.

My fav part was when Lopez makes her tea just like she likes it...that was awesome.
