Difficult sad story

I found this difficult to listen to at times because it is at some points quite brutal and so many lost people. The racism is tough to read about while I think it is historically accurate for the time sadly some of that kind of racism still exists today. Obviously we have made progress but there is still a long way to go and the political waters of today make it difficult

great insightful story. beautifully written really brings that period alive. Complex characters. REALLY great narration.

a good story, sometimes it's a bit hard to keep up

it was an okay to good book, it had it's moments where I couldn't keep up with who was who. but I enjoyed how most of this was kept to a true story the best he could do.

doesn’t work as a novel

Perhaps the history is accurate, I don’t know, but as an historical novel it just doesn’t work. The characters are undeveloped and the motivations for their actions are undetected. By the end, I didn’t care about any of them.

niche read

I can't for the life of me remember why I thought this book would be of interest to me. It uncovers the worst of humanity in an historical setting. Hard pass.
