Publisher's summary

Cairo, 1887. A beautiful September day. Penrod Ballantyne and his fiancée, Amber Benbrook, stroll hand in hand. The future is theirs for the taking.

But when Penrod's jealous former lover, Lady Agatha, plants doubt about his character, Amber leaves him and travels to the wilds of Abyssinia with her twin sister, Saffron, and her adventurer husband, Ryder Courtney. On a mission to establish a silver mine, they make the dangerous journey to the new capital of Addis Ababa, where they are welcomed by Menelik, the King of Kings.

Back in Cairo, a devastated Penrod seeks oblivion in the city's opium dens. He is rescued by an old friend, who is now in the Italian army, and offered the chance to join the military efforts. Italy has designs on Abyssinia, and there are rumours of a plan to invade....

With storm clouds gathering, and on opposing sides of the invasion, can Penrod and Amber find their way back to one another - against all the odds?

Superb volume in an AWESOME series

While my love of Africa surely influences my fondness for the author and his writing, this volume is particularly treasured because it provides closure to many characters and events. Having read all of the series, I can think of no other author who touches me the was Smith has.

A story teller of note. Long may his tales last and excite generations to come.

As much as I prefer Mr Smiths Southern African stories, I know his passion for Africa as a whole was legendary. The research and these historically accurate stories of great men lift my spirits amazingly. I’m trying to do justice to the great family names and their epic adventures by just delving into them chronologically. I’m nearly done with the Ballentine epics and plan to return to the Courtney stories realizing that they delve far deeper than the Ballentine novels. The thought of running out of these tales is my only worry.

I think what I’ve said above will suffice. My only concern is that one day I’ll run out. Long live the adventures of Wilbur Smith! What a story teller! Born not far from where I was. Fabulous stories, wonderful characters and awesomely narrated. What more could an old son of Rhodesia and Africa want for? Enough said! I have much to listen to.

Africa-I loved the performance of the reader

Marvelous story. I learned so much about Ethiopia and its history before the turn of the century.

The story behind all the magic

I have read all of Wilbur Smiths novels, many more then once and some even three times over the 25 years that I have listened to books on tape, books on my iPod and now books on I phone. I truly enjoyed Wilburs story of his life and much of it was woven through many of his novels. I give five stars to Wilbur Smith, five stars to all his novels and five stars for the hundreds of hours of pure listening pleasure while working on my scaffold installing ceilings, driving on the road and walking on the trail.
God speed Wilbur.

Not his best

I have been reading Wilbur Smith for over 40 years he is the master of his work. He has taken me to the edge and beyond with his inspirational tales. This one is in my opinion not one if his best, it lacks the fire that was so prevalent in all his other magnificent books.
