Publisher's Summary

The second instalment of the Conclave of Shadows.

The conclave demands its membership price from its new protégé: Tal must gather information on the sinister magician, Laso Varen. But to do this means service with the sorcerer's master, Duke Kaspar of Olasko--the very man he suspects of killing his family.

A powerful new epic fantasy series from one of the great masters of the genre. Talon, orphan of the Orosini tribe and last of his people, has been transformed by the Conclave of Shadows from a trusting young boy to the dashing young nobleman Talwin Hawkins: educated, confident, and now Roldem's premier swordsman.

The title, won at the Masters' Court, in front of the king, brought him a step closer to his desire--to avenge the massacre of his family. Two participants in the slaughter are dead by his hand; Lieutenant Campaneal fell under his blade during the Master's Tournament, and the other, Raven, died whilst attempting to butcher an Orodon village, as he did Tal's people.

But still his lust for vengeance will not be sated until the reason for the massacres has been uncovered and their architect revealed and punished. The conclave demands its price from Tal: he must gather information on Laso Varen, a magician of terrible power and subtle craft, dangerous beyond contemplation. To do this means service with the sorcerer's master, Duke Kaspar of Olasko--and swearing loyalty to the very man he suspects of killing his family, even if it means becoming the duke's right hand and tracking down his enemies: the members of the conclave and Talon's own friends.

The Depths of Despair!

Kasper the Ghost is not the only Kasper to be feared! Great new characters added to Midkemia, you think it cannot get better and then it does. Twists and turns run throughout this exciting series of books.

Annoying narrator

I have loved this whole series of books right from Magician, as I did when I read them, but the narrator is constantly trying to do accents that have no bearing on the characters and I find it grinding on my nerves more with every story and it should my enjoyment.

Good in Parts

Enjoyed it although not as much as previous series. Still it plays an important part in introducing new parts of Midkemia and different characters, which may well be important in future books. Overall is a 3.5 stars from me.

Lots of sex, violence, revenge and some magic

I enjoyed the more adventurous and noble parts of the story. Tal's stay in the kingly court seemed to be about Philandering and murderous intrigue which wasn't becoming of a honorable hero.
The style and story suited young males with a rampant fantasy life. Females seemed to be demeaned and treated as objects of games as the author admitted.
More adventure and noble actions including women do enter the story later.
Brandon Sanderson's stories are much more positive for female readers treating them with great dignity and understanding Females are more generallyvinterested in meaningful personal relationships and not just being pleasure objects for men's lust.
Fantastic narration.

amazing conclusion to talwins arc

amazing narration by Peter Joyce as usual, really liked this series, something different but reminiscent of serpent war, the conclave of shadows is intriguing and I would like to see where they go with that.
