Publisher's summary

In Killing Monica Bushnell spoofs and skewers her way through pop culture, celebrity worship, fame, and even the meaning of life itself when a famous writer must resort to faking her own death in order to get her life back from her most infamous creation - Monica. With her trademark wit and style, Killing Monica is Bushnell's sharpest, funniest book to date.

Not a Good Listen

Sophomoric. Let's just say humor is difficult to write well. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

Disappointing...

What would have made Killing Monica better?

I was expecting a story as engaging as Bushnell's other books but couldn't get through 2 hours of this story. .

What three words best describe Therese Plummer’s performance?

She is a good narrator.

Truly terrible

Probably the worst book/performance I have ever purchased

This is a dreadful thing. Do not put yourself through it. Not only is the story stupid, the characters badly drawn, the writing lazy, but also the reader has a really annoying manner of telling the story. If you quite like Candace Bushnell, as I do, you will be bitterly disappointed.

Not a page turner

Despite a strong performance by the narrator, this book wasn't on a par with earlier novels by the author. Too many twists and turns simply for the sake of having twists and turns. Few went anywhere meaningful. Protagonist, aside from her quirky name, was not appealing and not nearly bright enough to care about. I could never really engage with anyone and was never totally sure who the actual bad guys were because all characters were hugely flawed. The attempted feminist theme was dated and flat. Sadly disappointed.

Whiny... kill Monica already

Too whiny with unlikable lead character who seemingly lacked character. I am hardly a prude. In order to like this story line, you have to appreciate poor relationships, liars, whiners about success or lack of, pretentiousness, blah. I only got the book due to the acclaimed writer.

I'm very surprised that Candace Bushnell wrote such a stupid female character. It was very frustrating

Skip this one even if you are a Bushnell fan

What disappointed you about Killing Monica?

The writing, character development and overall story line were just so dull and poorly written. The whole thing felt very contrived and the "twists" were overly drawn-out. The book never really picked up steam. In fact, towards the end I kept checking my progress to see how close I was to the end as I wanted it to be over but felt I had invested too much time to quit.

What could Candace Bushnell have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Better character development and a simpler but more thoughtfully written story.

What character would you cut from Killing Monica?

Pandi - or at least less annoying towards the end. "Speak up already and quit dragging this thing out" is what I kept thinking by Chapter 17. Johnny Bellaga and PP for the same reasons - not only because the character was so typical/expected but because the narrator's interpretation was irritating.
