Publisher's summary

She's not evil, but she has certain…urges.

Lane is a typical teenager - loving family, good grades, after-school job at the local animal hospital, martial arts enthusiast - but her secret obsession is studying serial killers. She understands them, knows what makes them tick. Why? Because she might be one herself.

Lane channels her dark impulses by hunting criminals - delivering justice when the law fails. The vigilantism stops shy of murder. But with each visceral rush the line of self-control blurs.

And then a young preschool teacher goes missing - only to return in parts.

When Lane excitedly gets involved in the hunt for "the Decapitator", the vicious serial murderer that has come to her hometown, she gets dangerously caught up in a web of lies about her birth dad and her own dark past. And once the Decapitator contacts Lane directly, Lane knows she is no longer invisible or safe. Now she needs to use her unique talents to find the true killer's identity before she - or someone she loves - becomes the next victim.

Twisted!

This is one of the most sick & twisted books I have come across so far. I liked it.

glad this was short

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

no i would tell the the story if needed

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

the author fails to make her character interesting, she fails also to help the reader to empathize with the heroine or any one else. however I did finish it and that is something.

Which character – as performed by Emily Woo Zeller – was your favorite?

none

Could you see Killer Instinct being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Maybe but it needs a lot of work to flush out the characters. This bool is more like an on outline that is on the 3rd 0r 4th rewrite.

Keeps enticing one page more

After a bit of a slow start, this tale builds steam. I was lost at first in the puzzle, but then it began to take shape, and I was hooked.

Narration Better Than Story

The narrator is excellent, and makes this book... If not for that this would be a real stinker... An ok story burdened w/ trite and stilted dialogue, randomly thrown in plot elements, and a wanna be Dexter... The mystery and it's resolution isn't bad, but you have to get that far first, and w/o some fantastic narration you won't want to... Definitely a book that is more enjoyable on audio than it ever would be in print... Lane is actually a good character, but suffers from a writer trying to make a character edgier than they actually are... If it hadn't been on a daily deal, and dirt cheap, I would have returned it, but for $2 it took up an afternoon...

slow buildup, sudden ending

Really slow buildup, the whole story was a buildup. Way too much introspection . Definitely would not recommend , even though the author is definitely capable.

Tired clichés

The story is good. So is the writing. But there's nothing unique about the characters. This book has an FBI profiler and a teenage girl Dexter. Fun, but a bit lazy on the writer's part.

Wannabe Dexter?

I'm assuming this came out after Dexter in which case I can't believe they haven't been sued for basically copying the story line. This book was entertaining enough and the reader did a very good job but the whole time I kept thinking how ridiculous it was and how much it was like the plot was so similar to Dexter. The twist at the end was SO laughably ridiculous. I could have forgiven the similarities to the Ddxter show and suspended disbelief long enough to enjoy it but the ending was just dumb.

Captivating Read

I honestly did not expect to like this one as much as I did. It is technically a "YA" book, but the main female protagonist seems wise beyond her age in many ways. The narrator was fantastic, and I am very glad I listened to the Audiobook version. I felt the nature of the main female character's personality really shine through on the recording.
The novel was shorter than I would have liked, but as I said, it is a YA novel so I understand that was probably the reason it was of a shorter length than I am accustomed to.
I have yet to purchase the sequel, but have checked it out & added it to my wish list and am very much looking forward to devouring it as I did with this first book!!

Any additional comments?

not exactly sure what to say about this book. I bought it based on the description in the mystery of a young girl who was also possibly a serial killer. however once you get into the book you see the girl was just confused and is trying to be a vigilante. the book lost speed quickly for me with the young girl trying to avenge victims of horrible crimes. the entire storyline fell short I guess because there was no back story it just starts off with this vigilante mission that lacks. I will not be following up with this series.
