Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents a brand-new recording of Roald Dahl's classic The Witches, read by Miranda Richardson.

The Witches have a motto: One child a week is 52 a year. Squish them and squiggle them and make them disappear. The Grand High Witch of All the World is the scariest of the lot, but one boy and the grandmother he adores have a plan to get rid of the witches for good.

Really good to listen to

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would defiantly recommend this. its perfect to listen to on long journeys, and reminds you of your childhood with Dahl.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witches?

When the cook chops off the end of the tail of the young boy who is now a mouse.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

when the boy told his grandma that he was happy that he wouldn't have a long life as a mouse because he didn't want to live without her.

Any additional comments?

If you want something to listen to that's nice and easy this is it. I would say that sometimes Miranda voice is hard to understand when she is the high grand witch but besides that its brilliant.

Terrible grand high witch

Love this story we decided to listen to on a recent car journey. Had to turn it off in the end due to the incomprehensible shouting voice of the grand high witch.

Kids loved the grand high vvitch getting her just desserts. We had a lot of fun with triumph over disaster in the nick of time.

Wonderful witching wickedness

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to my nephews and nieces. The story has a great sense of whimsy and the recording is top notch (voice recording and sound effects)

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witches?

I liked the beginning, the creepy tales of witches and such.

What does Miranda Richardson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Drama. She was great in the various roles.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The film is about to beginning. YOU MAY REMOVE YOUR GLOVES!

Any additional comments?

Just good fun. I loved the whimsical language and childishness in the story.

Lovely fantasy with great ideas from the boy narrator

Great story but hard to understand Grand High Witch's voice. Very convincing voices otherwise. Highly recommended by family with 2 girls aged 6 and 9.

great story spoilt by sound quality

This listening experience was spoilt by constantly having to turn volume up and down due to poor mixing!

Grand High Witch - Inaudible

The Grand High Witch is the best part of the story, and up until that point, it was fabulous, however the narration of the voice is absolutely awful - the accent is loud, rough, and unable to be understood by adults and children alike.

Hard to listen to

I love this story and most of the narration was done very well, but I did not understand a single word the Grand High Witch said. was super distracting and put me off listening to it. wish there was another version on audible.

Roald Dahl done just right.

The voices done so well I almost turned it off a couple of times when the witches were showing their icky evilness to give myself a break. .. and In a grown up!

So well told and of course masterfully written

So easy to listen to her voice. loved all the different voices for all the characters. I also liked the little sounds that followed the story. it's a beautifully written story but I think it could be a tiny bit scary for kids under 8. never boring
