Publisher's summary

Kate Tranter is fatherless - or is she? The evidence of the tombstone she finds in the churchyard seems conclusive. And yet... The tombstone disappears and Kate is left with a mystery about which her family either knows nothing or will tell nothing. Her search for the truth leads her to Sattin Shore: and the way to Sattin Shore turns out to be a way into the past.

Her two elder brothers, her grandmother, her new friend Anna and her missing father all have a part to play in Kate’s search to fit the jigsaw pieces of past and present to find a new picture for the future.

Mixed. Beware parents

I know this is my personal opinion, but I would not recommend this for children. Maybe young adult? I was mislead so decided to write a review. There is a darkness, maybe you could say a bitterness, in the book which didn’t leave me with a resolved feeling by the end. I’m also tired of that old idea “no one will believe a child”. Some of the plot and characters I feel Pearce could have done more with. On the one hand I could not tear myself away, but on the other hand I ended disappointed. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Simply captivating

Helena Bonham Carter's narration was simply superb. I was captivated from beginning to end. It's like I was seeing the characters and events as the story unfold. Nice story, too.
