Polynesia the parrot, Jip the dog, Too-Too the owl, Dab-Dab the duck, Gub-Gub the pig, Chee-Chee the monkey and many other animals accompany Dr. Doolittle on his adventurs in England, Africa and on the High Seas. Please note - due to certain unfortunate racial epithets and insensitivities contained in the narrative of this book, parental guidance is suggested.

Loved it

Dr. Doolittle is one of our classic favorites. We repeat lines all the time or say remember when...

Emphasize the WARNING

To be honest, I thought I knew this book. I remember having read it, but I do not remember that by Chapter 7 we've already gone through "darkie" and "work like n******". I know that Amazon left a note that some of this was going to be inappropriate, but that note was at the end of the description. I kind of think that they should move it up a little bit and make it not available on Amazon Freetime. I get it it's a classic, and times were different. However, if I had I been reading this allowed in my classroom, I would have just changed a couple of words and would not have hurt the content of the story at all. The fact that this was recorded in 2010 and that wasn't done to make it appropriate is ridiculous. What is the point of having this book read if not to a child?

Please notice PARENTAL ADVISORY!

I was reading this aloud to my children and wanted to finish in the car, so we downloaded it here. I didn’t notice the parental advisory, however, until after hearing racial slurs and terrible storyline about an African prince who wanted to turn his skin white and eyes blue “like a prince” (even though he actually is already an African prince🤦‍♀️)

This is the original 1920’s version, not the updated book version that I was reading to my kids. While it does spark important conversations, I think it would be more appropriate to have a recording of the newer book version.

Avoid this version!

This is the original version of the Story of Dr Doolittle from 1920. My daughter listened for a while then flagged me for the use of the n-word! We looked ahead and there are 2 chapters about the “Black Prince” who was courting Sleeping Beauty and rejected for being “ugly” so wants Dr Doolittle to turn him white with blue eyes instead of “mud-brown”! These themes are damaging to all children and especially children of color. Shame on Audible for carrying this!
