Publisher's Summary

Far out in the ocean, where the water is as blue as the prettiest cornflower and as clear as crystal, it is very, very deep; so deep, indeed, that no cable could sound it, and many church steeples, piled one upon another, would not reach from the ground beneath to the surface of the water above. There dwell the Sea King and his subjects. We must not imagine that there is nothing at the bottom of the sea but bare yellow sand. No, indeed, for on this sand grow the strangest flowers and plants, the leaves and stems of which are so pliant that the slightest agitation of the water causes them to stir as if they had life. Fishes, both large and small, glide between the branches as birds fly among the trees here upon land.

"Such A Beautiful Telling of a Classic"

I, as many others grew up on Hans Christian Andersen books and movies. I love them today as much as I did growing up. The Little Mermaid was mine and my daughters favorite. To this day she still has all her copies including the movies. I can't wait until my granddaughter gets to listen to this one. She'll love it because of not just the story but the reading of it.

This was extra special with Abby Elvidge's narration. Her performance was incredibly good. Her voice inflections were perfect and she read in a tone that children would love. This is something I could imagine would be listened to over and over again by the little ones. Loved it.

"A Special Little Story"

This story of The Little Mermaid is a beautiful tale of a young mermaid princess and her love for the prince she rescued from a shipwreck. The audio version is well worth a listen just for the detailed descriptions of life under the sea. It's imaginative and magical, a special little story.

The narration was well done. Abby Elvidge doesn't dramatize the story, she lets the listener interpret the emotions the author intended. She gave each character their own speaking voice, and the scene with the sea witch was especially well done. I received a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

"Classic tale in its original form"

The little mermaid is a tale
Known by all in the current generations thanks to Disney. What is not known is the tale in its original form. The darkness of the tale where the mermaid seeks to gain a soul through love, the pain she endures, the callousness of the princes ignorance, the depth her sisters went to to save her, the dark deed her salvation would require. A fairytale that one might not readily tell a child in the modern age. Great story well narrated. Recommend for all. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

"Was a Delightful Listen"
Would you listen to The Little Mermaid again? Why?

This story is great and I would listen to this with my kids as a bedtime story.

What did you like best about this story?

Not what I expected, I grew up with only knowing the Disney's Version and to be honest this Audiobook even at only an hour long is better than the Animated one.

Which character – as performed by Abby Elvidge – was your favorite?

All Characters are great in this story, The Little Mermaid is probably the winner though

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The Ending I found myself repeating no, no, no... I loved the whole story

Any additional comments?

The Reader in this story is great she does the voices so well I knew who was talking at each point. Great job

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

"Originals are Best!"

I loved the original classics - fairy tales, novels, and nursery rhymes. I once wrote a paper in English Literature detailing how society- hundreds of years ago didn't sugar coat and shelter children with sugar plum dreams who grew up to think life should be fair, perfect, and a first love will last forever 100% of the time. The somewhat darker side of a non HEA wasn't conceived as promoting ill intentions, either. Most were viewed as simple entertainment or history (more so with regards to the nursery rhymes for the latter).
Hans Christian Anderson's collection was unique, yet lively with determination and hope.
Abby Elvidge did a wonderful job narrating this tale. She has a wonderful voice and tone for story telling to a younger audience- although it didn't come across as condescending to any age group. She almost reminded me of when one of my elementary school teacher read to the class after lunch.
I hope to hear more from Abby during future searches for more Classics on Audible.
Thank you for salvaging and promoting the original classics and allowing me to listen and review.

"No kiddie fun here 😄"

This was an unexpected surprise for me.
I didn't realize the Han's Christian Anderson version wasn't like the PG Disney version.
When I requested this book in exchange for my honest review, I had planned on listening with a young child.
Thank goodness I listened by myself first because, this is not a children's book.
This is more suitable for adults and teens.
This book does make mention of bare breasts and a man's soul entering a woman's body.
Compared to my library of book's this is very clean and mild.
But still the sexual innuendos is not something I want to explain to a 5 year old lol.
I did enjoy this book even though parts of it were a bit melancholy.
I like book's with a hint of darkness.
Even though It didn't end the way I was expecting, I'm still glad I had the experience of listening.
Abby Elvidge did an excellent job narrating.
Is it worth buying?
Well....depends on your intended purpose.
Want something to share with children? Keep looking...
Want it for yourself?
For the price and entertainment value,
It's worth listening to.

Reminder: this is the Hans Christian Anderson story before Disney made it kid friendly. It is dark and twisted in a way that only old fairy tales can be. It's not for everyone. For people who like old messed up fairy tales though, it's hard to do better than this.

I really liked the narrator. If she hasn't already, I hope she records more old fairy tales. Her presentation for this story was great. I especially appreciated her restraint. She didn't feel the need to exaggerate how messed up everything is; she trusted this time honored story to do that for itself.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

"Not your Disney Story!"

Interesting to see the differences between the story I know and the original. Some weird manipulative moralizing at the end, but a pretty good story.
