Publisher's Summary

This engaging tale by Jacqueline Davies is “filled with real-life problems that relate to math, getting along with siblings and friends, [and] dealing with pride” (School Library Journal). Evan’s little sister Jessie may be a smartypants, but he usually doesn’t mind her. That is, until he hears Jessie’s going to skip third grade and be in his year at school. Now, with tempers flaring, their friendly lemonade-selling competition is turning into an all-out war.

Sibling Rivalry

Would you listen to The Lemonade War again? Why?

This is a cute story about how sibling rivalry gets out of control when the younger is advanced two grade levels and now they are in the same class. Oh no! There is no allowance for fair play when things turn into a war. The kids are highly competitive yet they also have a sense of companionship from the divorce of their parents. The kids finally work things out yet there are a few whopping crimes committed along the way.

My Kids Got Inspired to Make a Lemonade Stand

After listening to The Lemonade War my kids got inspired to make their own lemonade stand. They particularly enjoyed the competition and they related to the sibling rivalry. One of the characters struggled in school and was very relatable to my dyslexic son. We enjoyed the entrepreneurial nature of the kids. There were just the right amount of characters in the story to make it easy to focus and pay attention to the book. The kids were anxious to listen to the authors next book.

Relatable and fun story

Great relatable story for kids and I love that it incorporates concepts of economics. I use this book with my 4th grade students and they love it. They can relate to the sibling rivalry in it whether they have siblings or not.

Dives into complex emotions and helps kids think about what they need to be good communicators and know/own their own emotions

Excellent book written from kids perspectives. Lots of good conflict resolution in the end. Wonderful at showing how when you say or do one thing and think it means what you think it means, it may not come across that way to someone else! It shows how people can see and feel things through their own "grid" and misinterpret what was said or done. This is why it is so important to check for understanding and communicate how you feel in a respectful way!

Loved The Lemonade War!

I loved this story and look forward to using it with my 5th graders during our economics unit. As I listened, I made note of several opportunities to stop for classroom discussions or to practice reading strategies.
