nice family stories

My five year old son loves these stories, and I enjoy listening to them as well. The cameraderie among the siblings is refreshing and it is nice how resourceful the kids are. Each of the stories has an element of mystery to them, which keeps you interested. (My three year old, however, starts to get antsy with these stories, because they are so lengthy - we have to take Dr. Seuss and Nate the Great breaks for him!)

A Classic!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Boxcar Children Collection to be better than the print version?

This audiobook was so convenient to listen to. On my phone, on my tablet, even on my computer. I plugged a little speaker in to my tablet or phone and we listened while eating lunch and doing dishes.

What other book might you compare The Boxcar Children Collection to and why?

A cross between Columbo and Mayberry.

What about Phyllis Newman’s performance did you like?

Her voice was awesome and very understandable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, couldn't wait to restart it.

Any additional comments?

I love the convenience of audiobooks. I am a busy mom and don't have time to sit down and read books but on the go is amazing. I really like how it starts where you left off or you can rewind too. My daughter and I listened together. It was like listening to the old radio programs. Family time together was nice.

My 8 year old loves the Boxcar Children Series

What did you love best about The Boxcar Children Collection?

These books show how children can handle themselves in some serious situations with grace and kindness. There are also some history lessons - how did people get help before cell phones and computers? Maybe size up a stranger and consider asking them?

What other book might you compare The Boxcar Children Collection to and why?

My son has caught up on the Magic Tree House and Geronimo books and this gives him another big series, although most of the Boxcar Children series hasn't made it from hard-copy to audio yet. These are all stories that my son goes back to again and again.

Very sweet family stories!

These stories are very endearing! They are stories that display idealistic responses to sometimes very difficult situations. The siblings are kind to each other and it’s fun to hear how they go about cooking, creating, and building things together with a loving nature. We truly enjoyed these stories!

Refreshingly Idealistic!

Where does The Boxcar Children Collection rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Many parents and caregivers might criticize these Gertrude Warner Chandler originals for being idealistic and unrealistic. The children don't fight and argue, are diligent, resourceful, and careful to live with integrity. There is surely a place in Children's Lit for realism that kids can relate to immediately, but there is also value in a story like this--where the siblings are kind and encouraging, the older kids put the feelings of the younger ones before their own comforts, and hard work can be fun and adventurous. It is inspiring. I've seen my own kids and now my grandkids play "Boxcar Children" out in the yard. They love the idea of being resourceful and cooperative and I love a book that can inspire that!

Who was your favorite character and why?

The three oldest children are my favorite characters because of the way they model cheerfulness and resourcefulness. The doctor, though, runs a close second because of the quiet way that he appreciates their work ethic, and the patience he displays in bringing them together with their estranged grandfather.

What about Phyllis Newman’s performance did you like?

Phyllis Newman is an excellent performer for this book. She really seems to "get" the sweetness of the characters, and she speaks slowly and deliberately, which for an adult, might be a little off-putting, but I think it is just what makes it appealing and approachable for young children.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The time when the children began to find things to make the Boxcar a real home was particularly moving. They were so very excited over finding usable things from an old dump, and especially excited to present the new things to Henry each time he came home.
